  1. Here are some more pictures of the Electric 02 that was built to use around the olympics in 1972. If i remember correctly, i think they even used one to lead the marathon.
  2. I agree! I was bummed when the NK message board went down. Thanks very much Steve (and Andrey) for bringing this back online. It will be invaluable for all of us with NK projects. Cheers Martin
  3. Just got back from the North American International Auto Show this morning. BMW unveiled new 1 series efficient dynamics, green, low emissions, study, concept, exercise thingy.... But what was really neat was the Inka 1602 Electric car that showed up on the stand yesterday parked right beside it. I'll post more pics later, but here's one for now. The show has a test track for low and zero emissions cars in the basement of COBO. So all your wonky looking EV's ( seriosuly check this thing out - www.commutercars.com they want 150K for this thing!!!) as well as current production hybrids are available for "test drives" I think BMW shoulds have put that 02 downstairs and had it doing laps with all these other cars - now THAT would have been funny Martin
  4. Oswaldo, Welcome to the madness! Its nice to see a community of NK owners coming out of the woodwork since the NK bmw website's forum has been shut down. Here's a christmasy photo of my car - yeah yeah i know its sacriledge that its sitting outside, im hoping to get it under cover sooner then later. Cheers, Martin
  5. Delia, As far as i know (growing up the son of a BMW dealer back in the day) "2002" denoted Two litre (20) Two door (02). As an interesting aside, when BMW bought the Glas factory in Dingolfing, they sent the whole production line for a Glas 4dr sedan model down to South Africa with an M10 engineered into it. The model was actually referred to as a "2004". BMW has always referred to any hatchback equipped car as a "Touring" hence the scripted nomenclature on the rear of the car. Now, back to the "tii" designation. This is of a further derivation of the "ti" (Touring International) designation that referred to special performance versions of production cars. (1600ti, 1800ti & TISA 2002ti 2000tilux -"ti with "lux"ury package") Kind of a early version of "M" or "IS" before those designations ever existed. While you are correct that "E" is the first letter in Einspritz, I think BMW adopted english as they were marketing these cars globally. The "i" designation has always existed for fuel injected cars from BMW and continues to this very day - even though BMW hasnt built a carb equipped car in years. So, long story short, even though the "touring" word is used twice on our hatchback 02's its for two different unrelated reasons. I hope this helps. Cheers, Martin
  6. yeah, its an abarth 500 - but the car i'd REALLY like is the "Assetto Corsa" version - a 200HP fiat 500.. how fricken cool would that be.... http://www.ultimogiro.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/assetto.jpg I hope they include the codriver pictured with the car, i just dont know how im going to explain it to my bride. "seriously honey she came with the car......no seriously..."
  7. So im cruising german used car websites, just to torture myself. Why? becasue im an idiot that's why. Anyway, i come across a 1600GT for sale - just one more of the many cars that would go in my dream garage - and practically s**t myself at the collection of metal in the background. Just of friday fun, can you name the nose of the car on the right side of the picture? If i could legally import it, i'd make it my daily driver. http://www.autoscout24.de/AllImages.aspx?id=vgszz4ekbwua
  8. Massimo, That looks terrific. Great job! Im sure the car looks 100 times better with teh refinished wheels on it. Cheers, Martin
  9. Just an FYI that im still working on this. Cheers, Martin
  10. The Penguin makes it personal for me, because im both! Please post pics of the final product!
  11. I think the original steelies on square light cars look great when they are clean. Its certianly a good DIY project if you're up for it. Prep the wheels well and paint them with Wurth brand "Wheel Silver" paint. With the original trim rings polished and shiny lug nuts and wheel centers they will look terrific and period correct. Cheers, Martin
  12. Id try Fedex Passport, they gave me the cheapest quote when i was looking. Look for a direct ship, or ask if it will be shipped on one truck. Be careful of discount shippers. They ususally broker the load and it will be on and off any number of carriers and sit in yards for days in between. Yards that could care less about your purchase.
  13. Touringguy, I work for ZF - we own Sachs. I too have a touring and was thinking of seeing if there is availbility from Sachs. I'll look into it. Cheers, Martin
  14. Yeah, i caught the open hood over his shoulder. and said to my wife. Look, its on 02 hood back there! I dont know that she even looked up from her laptop, but at least she acknowledged it with a "yeah". I did see the car being restored in his shop - i think its made "cameos" in a couple episodes. There was also the episode where he went to one of the auctions - Amelia Island i think, that he actually stops to look at a sahara roundie. I think that was the car that was in Autoweek or Hemmings that sold for stupid money about a year ago.
  15. wow! are you available for hire? This would make my NK project go much faster...
  16. Great video, Interestingly enough, when BMW bought Glas they shipped all the tooling for that car to South Africa and started building it in their plant down there and called it a "2004". When BMW moved out of the museum they set up temp camp across the street while the old place was being rebuilt and expanded. In the temp museum they had a "fishbowl" resto shop that allowed you to watch projects being worked on. My last trip there, they were just starting on one of these. I have some pics that i should try and find and post.
  17. Jim, Great photos, im jealous! Those Pugh's they know how to put on a good time!
  18. That truly was a great adventure. The day i sold my Sienabraun '75, two things came off it, the freshly remanufactured CR steering box and the cloisone Ofest grille badge. Part of me said i should have left it on because that's the car that made the trip, but i couldnt bare to part with it. After all, i made the trip too right? Now i just need to get it mounted on the Touring.
  19. I had an original set of these in my touring, but they were faded and worn. I contacted the folks at cocomats, who were really great, but unable to reproduce the checkerboard pattern. I ended up finding a company in Japan that makes them. They wont deal with anyone out of country, but I was able to make contact with a Japanese fellow through a friend who brokered the whole deal for me. I want to say the mats ended up costing me around $200, and arent exact, but pretty damn close. I'll try and remember to post pictures of them later. Cheers, Martin PS - After I got them I was told that they are still available aftermarket from Europe, but have never done any research to validate that claim.

  21. Jeff, I agree with allbim - take in the Deutsches Museum - it truly is amazing for anyone that is a gear head. Look for the display of old BMW plane motors in the aviation hall. Also, take a guided tour, its well worth it. I dont know if tehy're still doing it or not, but in the "hourglass" section at the front corner of the BMW Welt building, they were offering test drives of new cars. I took the one hour run, which was around 20 Euro,(there was a 4 hr run that included lunch on the road, but it was more $$$) they give you 20 Euro worth of coupons for any of the food service facilities inside the Welt, so its well worth it. There are predetermined routes that are programmed into the idrive, but i ran north up the autobahn to Garching and went snooping around at BMW M. Lastly, if you're looking for a interesting dinner experience, something not German, and you like meat - go to Charrascuria Brasil its at Brunnerstrasse 2 in Munich. Dinner is served in the basement of this beautiful old house in the middle of Luitpold Park. You can get there on U3 getting off at Scheidplatz, and its a short walk through the park. When you get there order the Rodizio, this is the full dinner with all different types of meat carved tableside. Desert is a pineapple, flambed tableside - its AWESOME....if you like pineapple...LOL Reservations are recommended, as they only serve Rodizio until a certain time in the evening - have the front desk at the hotel help you out with that. Have fun! Martin
  22. Jim, Jim, Jim... You're going to have to define "roadworthy" If you're ok with taking gravol to avoid sea sickness from the fact that the front shocks are TOTALLY toast, wear ear plugs, becasue the exhaust is blown out, and stop every 10 mins or so to let it cool down beacuse its about to hit the red mark on the temp guage, then yes, yes it is roadworthy. LOL My plan is to put her away for the winter and probably tackle her next spring. Cheers, Martin
  23. Hey Steve, I know a number of the local 02ers in Vancouver, but i've never heard of this guy. Maybe post on the BC02 listserv. You can find it in google. Cheers, Martin
  24. Hey Doug, Sorry to disappoint, but there are no Beaver pelts...lol. My car was one of two tii Tourings imported new back in 72 by BMW Canada Western in Vancouver. Everything else is grey market import, so i think its neat to be able to say that i have a real "Canadian" touring. The car lived its entire life away from the rock salt in Vancouver, until i bought it and shipped it to Chicago. (as an interesting aside its only owner was Terry Garner, the host of "Reach for the top".) But being that im a Victoria boy, it still resides in the care of a Canuck.
  25. I used to LOVE working car shows when i worked for HUMMER. People would actually drop their kids off at the car show and let them run wild - like it was romper room! One year we had a HUMMER wagon on display. The truck was locked, but we left the back doors open so people could see inside. I watched a guy pick up his kid, put him in the back, and tell him to go open the door for daddy... I walked over grabbed his kid and took him out of the truck. The father got in my face and told me to take my hands off his kid. I told him, his kid wasnt supposed to be climbing around in the $120,000 truck and that it was locked for a reason. He grabbed his kid and left. Just when i thought all humanity had gone to hell in a handbasket, i watched another father grab his sons hand as he reached for the truck and say "you will ask before you touch" I walked up shook the man's hand, and told him i wished that more people were like him. Then i opened the truck and let them both have a sit inside.
