  1. There is a guy in eagle, colorado that has a very nice shop. Back to you after I find it. Is the car in Vail white??? Where is the shop in Eagle? Name? I'm in New Castle and occasionally need some help.
  2. I have had the same re-occurring problem almost every year with my "new" 38/38 installed 6 years ago. I have tried the JB weld fix and it lasts maybe 6 months. I am on my third shaft now and it just broke at the end of the season. Earlier model webers had a cotter pin on the shaft to hold the choke lever in place. There is no room to drill on this shaft. I am looking for a long term solution! Is this steel weldable?
  3. The specification says .006" - .008". I use a .007" feeler with a snug fit. The .008" should not fit and the .006" will be loose.
  4. I had a single barrel weber 34 ?? on a 1600 engine and could never get it past 4500 rpm. Stock Solex was a much better choice.
  5. That wheel came on 1968 1600 that I bought in 1980. It was well used then so I believe it to be period to at least the mid 70's. No identifying marks under the horn button.
  6. I am getting 22-23 mpg in mixed driving and have seen 27-28 on the highway with the 38/38. My 32/36 gave me 25-26 average but I'm OK with the trade off in low end power. Plugs look good but there may be more improvement with playing with jetting.
  7. Scott, your illustrations are excellent. Thank you.
  8. Nice pics Matt. Looks like Cate can make anything look good with her camera!
  9. Bring him to Glenwood Springs and we'll go for a ride!
  10. Check the upper strut mounts. Installation of washers in the correct order and orientation is critical here. I had the same symptoms once and found incorrect parts.
  11. Ken, I commuted in 02's in Houston for some 19 years and several hundred thousand miles. I remember 2 times that left me stuck, a blown differential and a broken guibo. Broken clutch linkage on my 1600 almost stranded me but I was able to speed shift it to the shop. I always thought the fast lane was safest because it was easier to keep track of others if I was passing them and only had traffic on my right.
  12. i would say you are not doing so bad. You bought a highly modified example of a 2002 that will require regular and "non regular" maintenance to keep it going. As said above it is fortunate that they are fairly easy to work on and most parts will not break you compared with other cars ; like a 3.0CS. I took a drive in that car in 1980 when it had 19,000 miles on it. It was originally Malaga. The car was immaculate at that time. Years later when Bob returned to the U.S. I was surprised to hear that it was being restored as it still did not have many miles. I am sure the work performed by Mike Perkins and Casari were top notch. I believe you may be experiencing problems from lack of use because when these cars are sorted out and driven regularly they can give you many thousands of trouble free miles.
  13. I purchased my '75 with 87900 in 1990. I'm at 387,400 today. That's right at 300,000 miles in 20 years or 15,000 mile per year. The first engine lasted 164k. Current engine runs really strong at about 136k. It's been a rolling restoration and has never been out of service longer than 2 weeks ( not including winter hibernations).
  14. I have never used a wrench on my filters. I put a thin coat of oil on the rubber gasket , spin it on until the rubber comes in contact and then hand tighten 1/2 turn. Never had a leak and I can always loosen it by hand.

  16. Also consider changing out the carb. I had a 34 weber on a 1600 and it was too small. The stock 38 solex worked much better or upgrade to a 2 bareel weber.
  17. I learned to drive in my first car a 1968 1600 that I bought for $300.00. Houston - big city with big freeways and lots of traffic. After a little money went into it I had a personal interest in not wrecking it. With that said I loved the experience because the BMW was a drivers car, something you had to pay attention to all the time. I think it made me learn more about driving because I was not isolated from the road as much as you are in larger more "comfortable" cars. I did not even want to play the stereo loud because it was funner to listen to the engine. Your most important safety equipment will be defensive driving skills.
  18. I live about 50 miles from Aspen and you will see elevations of 8000 ft in Aspen and will have to go up to at least 11,000 ft to get to Aspen. I would recommend Independence Pass at 12,000 ft. if you are coming from Denver. Mine is carbureted and is jetted OK for about 6000 ft. I don't know how the k-fish compensates for mixture like modern fuel injected systems but for me it is what it is. I don't re-adjust anything to drive these higher elevations. It will run rich and you will lose power but it will still run and you will still have fun.

  20. That is shocking news. My condolenses go out to his family and friends. Mike was the most knowledgable BMW guy I ever met. I always loved to visit his shop. He did wonders to my cars over the years and I still very much enjoy my current M10 - a Perkins rebuild running tight and strong w/ 130k miles.
  21. I would not bother with the 2 screws at the windshield, especially if you have to remove the glass just to install. Once the 1 piece dash fits up under the glass seal and is attached with the other screws on the face it is not going anywhere. I have always thought that the additonal screws at the top may even offer enough restraint to crack the dash in the long term.
  22. I had a sinlge weber 34 ?? on my old 1600 and while it was smooth at the low end I could not get top end performance out of it. The stock Solex 1 barrel was much better suited for the 1.6L. I would think that the same would be true for a 2.0L.
  23. I'm in new castle - about 40 miles down valley. Send me an e-mail.
  24. The 84 just indicates the year the head was cast. It is just a replacement part from BMW that was made in 1984. I don't think there was any redesign of the head after the cars ended production. The other part picture in your post indicates a casting of 1976. The different head designs are designated with E12 , E21 or 121.
  25. I'm looking for the bracket that bolts to the transmission that suports the exhaust bracket. For a 1975 2002 with stock 4 speed.
