  1. I had a 1600 years ago that i used to start up when in storage. I let it go a couple of months at one point and when i started it the distributor housing gasket leaked - i attributed it to drying out for lack of use. Also seemed to have more electrical gremlins show up the longer it sat. My daily driver now sits the garage for about 3-4 months because of snow. I start it every 2-3 weeks, let it warm up to temp, run the A/C, all the lights and drive it around the driveway. Maybe I am causing more harm but it is ready to go in the spring and everything works.

    E30 A/C

Had some A/C work done on the 325ix and it now blows cold air for the first time in my ownership. Everything replaced except for compressor and converted to R-134. I notice that it seems to cycle on / off frequently and this results in an rpm change. I can watch a +/- 200 rpm change when it sits at idle and this is noticeable on the road as well. Normal operation? Compressor cycling too frequently? Ant insight would be great. Thanks,
  3. Not sure what is required. I think a call to the DMV would be in order. I have purchased one older car here in Colorado and the owner signed the title over to me. I then just registered it in my name in my home county. They did want to see the car and verify the VIN when I registered it.
  4. Congratulations! I used to have No. 1565522 in Houston in the early 80's. Originally Polaris and now junked, I wish I still had it.
  5. Follow up; I put in a carb rebuild kit and the smell is almost gone. A bit of fuel smell is still present when I open the air cleaner but not nearly as bad as it was. Mileage is up and hot starts are much easier. Was it the float adjustment, needle valve, power valve or accelerator pump diaphragm? The previous thread from Napa02 is interesting but it seemed to me that it addresses the symptom and maybe not the problem? There are many installations out there without a fuel return and without excessive fuel being dumped into the manifold.
  6. I've run 4 speeds on my daily drivers for 30 years now and I really like them. To be honest I have not driven a 2002 with a 5 speed so I cannot comment on them but I think the M10 engine feels much better in the higher rev range. I drive highways at 80-85 and at 4500-5000 rpm frequently and yes there is more noise but the motor performs well there. Here in Colorado I don't think a 5 speed overdrive would even handle many of the grades. Now a 5 speed close ratio.........?
  7. The choke shaft on the 38 carb is a bad design. The connection plate between the linkage and the choke shaft is a press fit and will fail. I have replaced the shaft twice before only to have it fail in the same way. A simple cotter pin retainer as used in other webers would have been better. I would recommend welding the pieces together. This fix has lasted on my carb for 2 years now.
  8. Seems to have gradually gotten worse. I have had the carb off to change gaskets, replace choke shaft, and put in a kit a few years ago. I'm just wondering if fuel is leaking out of the bowl into the throats when it sits?
  9. Yes, the spacer is in place.
  10. I am smelling fuel when I park my car in a closed garage and I believe I have narrowed it down to the carb. I have replaced all fuel lines from tank to carb and vent lines to cannister, gas cap seal, gas tank has no leaks. The charcoal cannister also does not seem to be emitting fumes. I can put my nose near the snorkel and get a strong smell and when I take off the top of the air cleaner the fuel smell is strong. I was getting some leakage around the base of the carb but a recent gasket replacement and lock washer install seems to have taken care of that. I have checked and re-checked the float level and it looks good and there is no fuel in the brass float. The carb,a 38 DGAS works well, cold starts are instantaneous but hot starts require putting the pedal to the floor like a flooded condition. what should i look at next? Thanks,
  11. I have stock springs with bilstein HD's, all rubber bushings,195/60-14 tires and love the ride for street driving. It is not too soft or too stiff.
  12. The 2002 painting was accepted into a juried art show at the Sylvia White gallery in Ventura. Only 3% of entries get accepted! I believe it is for sale at a price of $650. I'm a proud dad , now if I can only commision her to do a custom piece for me?
  13. Interesting, I was skeptical about the pertronix but I now have 8 years and 80,000 miles on mine without a miss. I don't miss wondering if the points are out of adjustment between tune ups but I do carry a spare set in the trunk just in case.
  14. Yes, the "rolling restoration" has touched virtually every component on the car. It is on the 3rd engine now with about 150k. This one was built nicely and I would like to see 200k on it at which time I will probably take it out and do a more complete resto on the body. It's funny how you do the same jobs over and over on a high mileage car (4th set of upholstery and carpet, 8 brake jobs, 40? tune ups, etc.). I think any car could last that long if you want it to.
  15. I use the factory brackets that mount to the manifold. They use 3 bolts and rubber mounts to isolate vibration. The cleaner sits on top of an aluminum adapter plate and rubber gasket that just sits on top of the weber - no bolts.
  16. Manufactured in May 1975 I bought this car in 1990 with 87k on the clock. It has been my daily driver since then and currently has 403k miles. I still average close to 10k per year although it does rest in the winter now. All stock except; 6 x 14 E30 bottlecaps tii exhaust manifold 9.3:1 CR 38 DGAS with manual choke lightened flywheel air dam Bilstein HD's on stock springs Behr A/C w/ larger radiator and electric pusher fan Never officially "restored" this car has been a rolling restoration since I have owned it. It does have some patina in some of the usual places but it still shows well and drives very well. This car continues to give me great joy for everyday driving. It receives extensive maintenance and has always been very reliable. Thanks to the FAQ for helping to keep her going!
  17. She doesn't do lithos but she could have prints made. She said for a limited production it is still relatively expensive. She also said custom originals may be an option. Best thing is to send her an e-mail through her site and correspond.
  18. My car runs much better when I wear the gloves!

  20. I went to Denver last weekend to the my daughters art show opening and when I turned the corner I see this drawing of a 2002 staring at me! What a surprise since I have been asking to her to paint a car picture for years now. She does contemporary work and always said I don't do cars. Anyway, her show "Entangles" contained images of her everyday life past and present. I guess growing up riding in a 2002 will leave an impression on you. 21. Thanks for the replies and the diagnostics C.D. and Chris B. My issue turned out to be the alternator. Regulator checked out OK. I am getting 14.05 V at the alternator and 13.98 V at the battery at idle speed. The difference seems reasonable for 37 year old wiring and right in the middle of the desired 13.5 to 14.5 V.
  22. Yes, checked tension. I was definitely getting slippage at higher rpms. I have new urethane bushings in hand but want to make sure i put them in the right alternator. I tightened the belt and don't detect any slipping at the lower rpms.
