  1. now what do i do? been working on a car (this car and my tii) practically every spare minute for 2 yrs (if you saw my yard and weeds etc you'd believe me) and now the projects are complete. i think i may just drive the cars for a while for a change. this is greg's car, his design, his money, mostly his work that i put the finishing touches on. the motor was rebuilt 2 yrs ago and has about 600 miles on it. he's never really driven the car and it drives really well. i rally like the way it turned out. greg worked a lot of really crappy hours at basically minimum wage to get the car to this point. we're leaving friday to head to tucson to house-sit for a friend and along the way south we're delivering the car to him in calsitoga, ca. now i have room in my garage!
  2. the issue hasn't been side to side alignment, not withstanding your manipulation of the center support bearing, something bmw never intended in their original design. yes, the rear of the tranny can be positioned from side to side (oem slotted holes), but that doesn't get you much with a fixed position center support bearing. it does allow for getting the output shaft parallel to the guibo. and that hasn't been the problem on the last 7 tranny installs (4 and 5 spd) i've done in the last 3 months. its that its impossible to get the shaft straight and have the guibo alaign parallel to the output flange. the forward section of the drive shaft needs to be angled up slightly. the perfect solution would be for an center support bearing that allows for higher vertical positioning that, along with raising the rear end of the tranny, would position the guibo parallel.
  3. wrong...there is at least 3/8 inch of free play side to side on both trany and center mount, if you work them out. The reason for this driveshaft to be aligned is its a 2 piece driveshaft with a center "soft" support. If it is not straight it will wobble "like a wet noodle" when torque is applied to it, as one already mentioned. And the reason why it is a 2 piece type (instead of a straight pipe like an american muscle car of the same era) its because this type of DS eleminate the first natural vibration/harmonic. IE less prone to vibration, when its all top shape of course The u-joints on theses are there to compensate for SMALL miss alignments...nothing comparable to a jacked pick-up truck. my center support bearing (stock from blunt) has one slotted hole and one round hole - as in no side to side adjustment. do you manually slot the other hole? every center support bearing ive ever had comes with a round hole/slotted hole combo
  4. there has been more than one post regarding how a driveshaft needs to be straight, there are tools fabricated/designed to determine how straight a driveshaft is aligned, etc. question 1. why? there is a u-joint in the center of the driveshaft that will make up for mis-alignment question 2 there is no provision to align the center support bearing side to side or up (down with washers), and no provision to align the ass end of the tranny side to side. and my problem, specifically, is the center support bearing in never too high, its always too low (especially with a 5spd conversion), where there is no fix possible.
  5. danielsternlighting.com has a lot of info about how to improve the light output from your headlights. really good stuff, and incorporates much of what mike is suggesting.
  6. like 100mph at 65mph unknown diff ratio (320i lsd) but... if i have a 3:91 dif and the speedo is geared for a 3:64 that would do it wouldn't it? plus.... how do you get the speedo needle off? and on?
  7. thanks for the ride and nice meeting you might be our only trip to the V@V for a while 3 weeks in a 2002 is a bit much
  8. good to see some familiar faces from the seattle area and meet a few from oregon. really nice event, good beer, hope you ducks keep it going and growing. special mention on the next 2 pics this is jeremy's car, a 20yr old student and a really nice young man i enjoyed talking with you about our cars. yours is beautiful! keep up the good work and feel free to email me anytime if you think i can help nice 3.0's lollipops and then today, sunday, cindy and i enjoyed the twisty bits coming north by st, helen's, in the rain, with no other cars on the road more random shots of my fave cars a s14 red 2002 a very very cool car that obviously has had lots of attention and john schneeman's lotus hard to describe how low this car sits. good thing its "arrest me red" i want one!
  9. OK for those that want to meet up, my wife and I will be in the parking lot near krispy cream, in front of JC Penny's, at the Tacoma Mall, at 8:30. my cell phone is two 5 3 dash 441 dash 5002
  10. the passenger side rocker panel trim will not fit on my son's modified 2002. the IE alpina flares now interfere with the top edge of the trim preventing it from seating properly in the oem clips. so, anyone have a good idea/product that will be able to hold the trim on place? i'm thinking a double sided foam tape of some kind would work if its strong enough. TIA

  12. i live in the gig harbor area so i was thinking of the JC Penny's parking lot at the Tacoma Mall, or some such thing. There's going to be a drive right after the Horsepower Freaks dyno demo at 11am, so for anyone wanting to so that drive we'd have to hit the road from Tacoma around 8:45am
  13. to the top anyone else? since all you guyz live north of me we can probably meet somewhere down here in the south end don't forget to register
  14. Can you explain this a little more - what is a threaded stand off? (pics?). Does this stand off apply to all Hella lights Also, does this eliminate the vibration? follow this link http://www.alfacybersite.com/ACSCibCt.html scroll down, they are called anti vibration stay bars it took some perseverance to get ahold of the site owner
  15. if you use these brackets you will need to stabilize the top of the light as well to keep the fog/spot lights from vibrating while you drive down the road. hella makes a threaded standoff specifically for this.
  16. let me say it first. i'm an idiot. electrics has always been a subject i avoided. hydraulics, mechanicals etc are great, electrics/electronics are not. so i am in the last stages of getting my son's car ready to drive down to napa, california. i'm doing little things in the engine bay and look at the new bosch al116x alternator. not knowing (ignorant) that there are only two connections, and seeing one extra push on spade connector hanging there (from the left over three connector plug), i try to connect the left over connector. i see there's an un-used terminal on the back of the alternator (not B+ or D+) so i try to connect the two. BIG sparks. figured i'm shorting it to the chassis and keep on trying. more BIG sparks. finally get all connected, get greg's center console gauges hooked up (oil press, oil temp, volt meter) and start the car. no charging going on. none verify tonite the connections are correct (B+ and D+ only) and still no charge. one FRIED alternator (probably diodes) $150 out the freaking window i need to learn up on electrics/electronics probably could have taken a class long ago for less than the cost of a new alternator so............what's your story?
  17. I saw your brace/battery tray at the V@V, and it is a thing of beauty, quality machining and design. I think a lot of 2002 folks would be interested.
  18. it can still be ordered from mobile traditions for both flag and trap mirrors
