67 1600 door latch and strike

I have gotten to the point of this worn arrangement that I must replace the strike because the door will not align. Any sugestions (besides traveling back in time) or observations on how this went so bad. Sorry for the bad photo Q, took pics in anger..........

I replaced my passenger side latch a couple years ago when it broke and I recall it took lots of trial and error to get it aligned to shut smoothly. Once I found the right spot, so lined up perfectly though and has been great since. I see your plastic stopper thingy? is all crumbled up, that may be a problem in how it is sitting once the latches connect up. Here is a pic of my driver side latch, which is perfectly aligned (I made very slight adjustments to it, but the car has never been hit so this should be a solid reference point to stock alignment). I may have an extra driver side latch assembly to sell if yours is broken. My pass side looked OK but the door would never shut completely and hold tight against the seal. If that's the problem you have you likely need a new latch.

As I recall it was aligned until the rubber gave way. Where did you find the rubber and strike?

Bav Auto:

Door Catch Rubber Buffer

Part # : 51 21 1 823 487 $ 6.95

Door Latch Buffer

Part # : 51 21 1 809 735 $ 1.50

That should make a nice difference for you.

Those part #s are for later "normal" '02 door latches NOT for these early '66-67 1600s!!! These are the same as the 4 door Neue Klasse BMWs.

The door latch buffers are not available for these early latches... Sorry. :(

I have bought NOS door latches only to have the little buffer disintegrate before my eyes. The larger buffer can be found used from a few places. I might even have a spare or two, if I can remember to check. :)

Thanks. That will be my official start.

I wonder, has anyone tried the listed strike PN # 51 21 1 118 263 with the older latch?

Sorry, doesn't work. :(

What I HAVE done is update to the normal latches. If the car is SO original and worthy of preservation than I would go Jeff's route and preserve every detail. But my red 1600-2 will get the later ones.

from rubber stock (try an industrial supply shop) or even from an old motor mount that isn't too far gone. If a fellow '67 owner can make you a tracing of those buffers, you'll have something to work with. I made new motor mounts for my 48 Fiat from very dense 2" thick rubber cut out on a band saw and drilled. They worked great.

That being said, those early latches were redesigned for a reason: they would come open at inopportune moments. I remember early 1600s whose doors would pop open during an autocross run when they would hit a bump while cornering. Pretty disconcerting to the driver! So make sure they're properly adjusted when you do replace the rubber.

Mike, I bet the car whose door popped open had a bad or mis-aligned latch. The latches had to be redesigned to meet US DOT side-impact standards in 1968. Supposedly the door would pop open too easily when the car was hit in the side.

OP: I don't have any spare rubber parts, just the latch mechanism (door side). Like Tom said they fall apart easily so I'm praying mine hold up.
