1975 2002 looking to de-smog

Hello Gang,

I'm a new proud owner of a beautiful 1975 sahara 2002. Now as some of you might not agree with my plan, I'm looking to take of all the junk that is required for smog. I'm aware that the previous owner (1 owner car) had a catalytic converter installed to pass smog (years ago) and I'm wondering what else is under there that can be removed? (besides the thermal reactor).

Note: excuse my lack of knowledge and know how but i'm slowly learning. Removal of these items will be done by a pro, I don't feel comfortable touching this stuff. Do you strongly recommened finding a BMW specialist, or can my exhaust guy figure it out?

Thanks in advance!

kq.

You can do it yourself. Its not to hard and its a good way to get familier with your engine bay. The thermal reactor is obvious. Chuck it. Remove the air pump. Its located under the alternator just ahead of the oil filter. Under the intake manifold is the EGR muffler. There are two bolts in the intake manifold that hold it on. Remove them and the small muffler along with the EGR valve will come loose. You will also have to plug some vacuum ports on the intake manifold. The electrical can be confusing, but its not difficult.

There is a silver box on the driver side firewall and a couple of sensors that have to be removed along with a good amount of wiring. Take your time. I did it. Took me a few hours but it was well worth it. Good luck!!

I'm getting ready to do the same de-smog to my 1976 2002 so this is helpful. I have located all of the parts but have a couple of questions.

1. What do you use to plug all the holes after removing tubes, hoses?

2. Did you remove and plug the line to the Solex carburetor dashpot?

3. Didn't see a silver box but saw "white," "red" and "black" electromagnetic valves on an emissions system diagram. "Black" has distributor vacuum advance so that stays, correct? The "red" and "black" are removed, right?

4. Does the "choke relay" remain?

5. Think anyone wants all the removed parts?

Thanks.

Thanks for the help!

This is really chinese to me, is there some kind soul out there that could go through the steps to finding these parts and executing the removal? A dummy guide if you will... the most i've done on cars is changing oil, brakes, and tires.

Thanks!

have someone else do it, try NOT to cut or otherwise destroy any more of emissions stuff than absolutely necessary, and above all DON'T THROW ANY OF IT AWAY (if you don't want to keep it, post it for "give-away").

Given the current status of environmental awareness and concern over everything from petrolium usage to global warming (please note - no opinion pro or con is being expressed here....) there's no way to know if we'll all get stuck at some future time with having to reinstall whatever pollution controls came on whatever year car we have - from what I understand, many of the emissions system components are NLA, so if that ever comes to pass, there's likely to be a mad scramble for emissions system parts, and you'll probably be really, REALLY glad you didn't toss 'em.

I would have to agree with Barry and Curt. Over the years, I have offered to buy or pay for shipping for smog equipment off thermal reactor equipped cars. So, if the equipment is in good condition and you are not interested, then let's stay in touch.

If you want a guide to removing the pieces, a shopping list for the items you should have for replacement, and a guide to the labels, then give me a few days and I will put one together for you.

I have removed this equipment from several 75 and 76 2002s over the years and would be willing to put together a guide for the de-smogging of 1976, thermal reactor equipped '02 cars.

Brian, your guide would be great - thanks! If you know of someone who wants the parts, I would only charge for shipping. So far, I have ordered the bolt-on plate for the intake from the FAQ Store. Engine is stock with Solex carb which I plan to replace with Weber 32/36 (or similar) one day.

BTW, bought my new 76 in San Mateo CA a few weeks ago. They're rare here in Charlotte and really get some admiring looks.

Thanks much,

It's on my car. It has it.

Well, yes and no. A '71 has an air pump but not the vacuum valves, engine speed sensor, or electrical doo-dads that were installed on '74-'76 cars, not to mention the dreadful thermal reactor found on all U.S. '75s and U.S. '76s sold into the California market. A recent thread regarding single-barrel Solex air filter housings had a good schematic, posted by Jim Gerock and showing the air pump system on a '69, might be useful. The subject car of that thread had been "de-air pumped" without bothering to plug open outlets and fittings.

Regards,

Steve
