Basically every thing will bolt on, depending on the year 1602. As the 16's didnt come with sway bars, on the early ones there is no brackets on the rear trailing arms to attach them, but you could swap the whole trailing arm. The later ones used the same arms as the 02's. Remember if you are using a 2L motor dont forget to use the 2L manifolds the 1.6L ones have smaller ports. Happy 1602 owner - with a 2L motor. brakes, but I don't think you'll notice the difference on the street--the shoes are just harder to find.

1600s also didn't come with tachs, so you're gonna have to find one to replace the clock.

Late 1600s came with tachometers. My '71 (1572840) did. Dunno when they started into standard production. Also, my rear drums are the same as 2002 drums. It probably became the same as 2002s when the 1600 was changed over to dual circuit brakes. It still didn't come with sway bars, though.

if you use a stock 2002 engine with the stock 1600 rear ende you will end up with a lot of low end torque - you will easily beat stock 2002s off the line - much to their surprise.

From '66 to '71 there are many differences. after mid '69 a 1600 is VERY similar to a same year 2002 except for the 1.6 motor and 4.10 diff.

Before mid '69 all 2002s and 1600s had different brakes and rear differentials than later cars and are harder to find original parts for as well as being harder to do 5spd conversions to etc...

Before '68 when the 2002 came out 1600's were very different beasties. Upgrade wise generally speaking Everything from a 2002 will bolt into a 1600.

We can really only get down to specifics once I know what year the car is including the VIN and what you plan on doing with it.

The change over to the 230mm drums was basically when they went away from the remote booster setup (I think). After that the 1600 brakes mirrored the 2002's, every year.

When the 2002 came out in '68 was when changes to the 1600 brakes mirrored those of the 2002, single circuit brakes included, right through the mid '69 change to dual circuit front brakes.

At least that's the way it is for USA cars. I don't have much experience with Euro cars.

To make a safe modern driver you'd pretty much have to have a 2002 parts car '71 and later. To easily convert to a 5spd you should change to a "short neck" Differential and matching rear suspension. I recommend updating ALL the braking and pedal system to '69 and later 2002...etc...

OR, you can keep it all stock and go into hock. :)

Me upgrading the thing I have two whole 02s rusty, the reason for getting this two cars, actually one is a 1971 2002. Both will get 5 speeds and other goodies. I told my wife that I`m keeping the parts under 5k for the year. Just parts.

Sounds good, when you have any questions just ask here or email me personally at tjones02 at hotmail dot com. I've done a few 1600-2 to 2002 and tii conversions and have been living breathing '02s and BMWs my whole life.
