new to the 02 club!

Hey all,

I'm new to the BMW 2002 club - I just picked up this '73 4 speed on Friday. All stock save a 320i front brake upgrade, momo steering wheel and 320i alpina wheels. Some guy bought it for his 17 year old son and they stripped the car (all trim and windows out), sandblasted the body to bare metal, prepped and had it painted this sky blue. The interior is tan with a black dash, in good condition, but it needs new floor mats and possibly seats. I'm the 4th owner, it's been a bay area car for 33 years - no rust anywhere. I also recieved all maintenance records back to the original pre-sale inspection stamp in Ventura CA on January 5th 1973. lots of hefty money spent in the eighties, the most substantial single bill for a new engine and transmission at $3,975. I paid $1,500 for the vehicle.

I'll be needing to buy some parts fairly soon - windshield and door weatherstriping, tune-up parts (cap, rotor, points), carpets, shift boot, licence plate lights, over-rider rubber pads, shocks that kind of stuff. Is there someplace on the web I can order from, or is the BMW dealer the best bet?

I also need the rocker mouldings, and plan on a nardi wheel and shift knob. sport seats soon to follow - are there any 02 classified forums I should check for these items?

FYI these pictures were all taken in as-bought condition right after i brought her home.

I already stripped the wheels and painted them silver with black centers. they look much better. New Yokos in the mail.

IMG_2366.jpg

This momo wheel sucks. It's only about 12" and sticks out from the column a good 5". terrable driving position - it's got to go.

IMG_2379.jpg

IMG_2371.jpg

the engine hesitates or misfires sometimes when maintaining a constant speed. already adjusted the timing and changed the spark plugs. Should I go at the points or carb next?

IMG_2385.jpg

I bought the BMW as a cool but reliable second car to compliment my first love - a 1967.5 Datsun Roadster. Great on the sunny days with the top down, but wet and drafty when it's raining or cold out!

I'm looking forward to many enjoyable miles in my little blue '02!

my old eyes may bee foolin me but I do not think the carb in the picture is a weber 32/36. I only see one "barrell" and the 32/36 clearly has 2 "barrells."

Get the car running correct first (proper time, correct points gap, ect...) before trying to tune the carb.

A couple of places out your way would be La Jolla Independent, Carl Nelson's place, "bimmerdoc.com"; he has a great selection of new and used oem BMW 2002 parts and also 2002haus, in the bay area I believe. You can get some good used parts from folks on the board here as well. I had a '73 2002tii about 13 years ago and bought it from a local BMWCCA member, had the same Momo steering wheel on it for a short period of time. I also didn't really like it, ended up putting a later model 2002 steering wheel on it. I would say to go through the rest of the ignition, make sure the points, condensor, rotor, and distributor cap are good, check for excessive lateral movement at the distributor shaft too and if you're unsure if the carburettor has been rebuilt, pick up a rebuild kit from Carl, at La Jolla Independent, always a good thing to have on hand. Good luck with the 2002, good buy at $1500.00

Original early rocker moulding were very well made, with rounded corners that had no gaps. They popped on over the clips with a little firm pressure. Later they were made rougher at the corners and had to by installed with a dead blow hammer. By the mid 80s they were so poorly made they don't fit over the clips at all. If anyone's interested I'll post pics showing the decline in quality.

Thanks for the replys guys. Oh my name is Zack guess I should have said that first!

Johnny I'd definately be interested in some wrenching sessions in S.F. - I'm always up for fun runs on the weekends too.

The carb is a Solex 2 barrel, not sure of the designation, maybe a 32/32?

what are the reproduction rocker mouldings like today?

Zack-

The reproduction rocker panel mouldings where I got mine didn't come with the sythetic strips. I have both the old and new mouldings. I have a feeliing the old ones might be better once I clean them up a bit. I think the seals probably have a lot to do with the quality. I will have a better idea what's better when I R&R them or try to fit the new seals on the new trim pieces and fit them to the car. All bets are off because the rocker panels themselves are new too! Just a heads up I wouldn't order the new rocker panel mouldings if I had to do it again.

Well here you go. You have a nice start. My wife has a 69 Datsun 1600 Roadster. We bought the 2002 for the kids but I fell in love with it. Now my girls drive my Durango and I drive their 2002.

If you need anything, even if it's just an excuse to get out of the house, go to O2 Salvage; Phone # 510-782-2002. They're in the Bay area. I've ordered several parts from them and they are incredably helpful. Their staff all drive O2s and they are dedicated to preserving the breed.

If nothig else just visit their facilities. They have more used and new 2002 parts than probably anyplace else in the Bay area. Nice people too.

I live in Seattle and I'planning a trip down to visit them next spring.

Sounds like maybe you're somewhere in the SF Bay area - check the Bay Area 02 web site for local activites, and plan to make the spring swap and show in PaloAlto on May 20th (park across El Camino Real from Stanford shopping center). There's always a good turnout, and usually quite a few folks selling in the swap meet area.

Another good source for used parts is the bimmers.com '02 classifeds; Bavarian Auto Dismantlers in Rancho Cordova generally has a few '02's in inventory, but they're generally on the upper end of the price curve.

Looks like a nice car man!!

Say my bro (jetboy) found this place in Berkely

Bay Motor Wrecking: 510-649-1112

he usually isn't there early--so afternoons are best.

The guy doesn't have a web site or anything. I guess he's got a wrecking yard and a good cache of bmw 2002 parts warehoused. So far prices have been pretty reasonable

best of luck!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
