There is no 0000, I have confirmed that with BMW Group Archive in person.

BMW always--at least back in the 2002 era and up to when the 17 digit VINs began in the early 80s-- began their numbers with XXX0001.  However...at the far end of a VIN run, there was an 0000.

Example:  the first US 2002s were 166 and 167XXXX VINs.  But when the factory reached 1679999, they produced 1680000 before moving on to 2570001.  I know because I saw 1680000 (an obviously US spec car) sitting at the base service station at Tinker AFB, OK back around 1986/87.  Surprised the heck out of me too...

But yes, 2760001 has been in the hands of Sacramento Chapter BMWCCA past president Patricia deWitt for well over thirty years. I remember hearing about when she bought it when I was a teenager. I’ve seen the car many times over the last 15 or so years, and have had a good hand in documenting it as well. It has recently changed hands, but will be staying in the Western US. I know who the new owner is, and perhaps you do as well, but have been sworn to secrecy.

You’ve already said too much for a guy who is supposed to keep this a secret…

some cars

some motorcycles

some airplanes

some surfboards

100% correct. “Regular” production of U.S.-spec tii’s — all of which were 1972 models, unlike Euro-spec tii’s, which included 1971 models — did not start until October 1971. And there were perhaps no U.S. retail deliveries in 1971.

Best regards,

Steve

I’ve met a guy who ordered a Malaga Tii and  picked it up in December ‘71 from Peter Pan BMW just south of San Francisco. Sadly he sold the car within a year to get a 911, and didn’t remember the VIN.
