WOSP Starter

Alright, i'm going to bite the bullet, and fork over some cash for a proper starter. The reman AC Delco unit I bought last November is already being finicky (i'm 99.9% sure it's not the car), and i'm tired of dealing with their customer service.

 

I was originally eyeing the SR440X, but that one and the SR441X are out of stock everywhere.

 

I did come across this WOSP one for the M10, has anyone tried this one out? I don't see anything in the threads...

After over 45 years with the original starter, once rebuilt, I went with the sr41x M30 six starter , cheaper and available. No issues at all with install and it spins the motor likes the plugs are out. The spin rate is noticeable faster and appears to take less current to do so. You will like the newer style starter very much.

Yup, any m30 starter will fit. It's a 4 pole version of the m10 2 pole starter.

The WOSP starters are good, several companies offer a similar product with Denso gear reduction drive mounted to a custom-machined adapter. I like the IMI Hi-Torque brand (made here in SoCal), have one on several of my cars and numerous customer Porsches, but I was shocked to see they don't seem to offer BMW starters---they have random stuff like Alfa Romeo and Lotus and Rover and tractors, but no BMW.

 

I have the SR440X E30 M3 starter on my 2002tii and it has been great for 10 years. Out of stock everywhere, so you could also try the SR41X as suggested. My shop has had issues here and there with Bosch reman parts, more so with alternators than starters, but this price is good, even if you have to eat the core charge:

They usually come with a pigtail with connector housing for the terminal 50/solenoid signal wire.

When you get it, weigh the starter and drop a note here.

Can you just plug in the ignition spade connector to this terminal too?

Here are pictures of the starter weights. Looks like SR41X starter is a full lb less than the original.

Alright just finalized install.

 

SR41X starter works excellent, crank speed seems noticeably faster and "peppier".

Just don’t use the terminal at 12:00 on the solenoid, it is hot all of the time.  On the SR-71x it was switched power to bypass the ballast resistor.

I think I might cover the other terminals to prevent any unwanted "shorts"...i've been know to do this from time to time...
