1967 BMW 1600 on eBay

Similar un-restored, but solid early 1600s have sold in the $20k - $25K range. It wouldn't take much to sort this one out. I'm suspecting the reserve on the auction was set at about $20K. Thirty years ago this car wouldn't fetch more than about $1,600, but a $1,000 would have been more realistic given it needs some attention. For some of you folks with deeper pockets, this is a great deal You'll pay a lot more for a Porsche 356 or 912. This hobby has changed. It's for a different group, now-days.

This looks like a nice unmolested car. I’m surprised it didn’t sell for the reserve price. I guess timing is everything. Remember this Schwartz 67 from BAT several years ago?

Early cars in such unmolested condition are really rare. BMW owners just couldn't help themselves with so called "Upgrades". I can understand throwing on beefy sway bars and slightly stiffer and lower shocks, but many owners threw in 2.0L engines, installed later seats, converted to 12V electrical etc, ruining the character and the clean lines of the 1600 in the process. This Schwartz car would have sold for about $1,500 or less back during the 80s. There were many around. Most ended up at the wrecking yards.

What state is it headed to, and is there a chance the new owner will share any adventures here in the 2002FAQ?

My brother left this 1967 1600 behind when passing away in November. Out of all his 2002's I think his 1600 was his baby. She is a beauty.

Dan seemed like a really nice guy and is missed here.  Dan sent me that same picture of his 1600 during a brief correspondence we had after I replied to a classified ad he placed for a early owners manual "FREE" for the cost of shipping. Lucky for me I was the  first to reply and won the owners manual. He was a generous man.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
