Motorcycle Carburetors

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else successfully installed motorcycle carbs on there M10 or S14? I just surpassed the 51,000-mile mark with the 44mm Mikuni VM-series round slides on my S14.

I recall seeing a few post about guys attempting to install the Yamaha R1 motorcycle carbs, another post using a set of CV carburetor used on Harley's.

Checking see if they ever made any progress with their build?

Hi Doug,

I've always thought of installing 4 x Bing 40mm CV carbs on my stock '76...just for kicks.

Bore and stroke of my R100s (motorcycle) is almost identical to the M10 engine, so all I need is to boost the CR to 9.5:1, and I should (technically) get about 130 bhp. However, why not just go with twin DCOE's?  But I digress....still a '76 California car!!

I don’t have experience with motorcycle carbs on a car but I have a lot of experience with snowmobile carbs on snowmobiles. Have you thought about switching to a racked set of flat slides? They take up a lot less space, are easier to sync, only need one throttle cable that mounts lower so your stock hood would clear and require less throttle pull effort than round slides (probably not a concern when using your foot instead of your thumb).

I tried flat slides on one of my race cars back in 2001, a Toyota 3TC, could not get them to work. Several guys at Meridian Speedway in Idaho tried on different motor combo's (Ford Pinto, Honda, Datsun & Toyota) with no luck. They all switched, or went back to the 44mm Mikuni round slides.

Edit:  sorry Doug, sounds like you already knew what they were and what the deal is with them.  I was typing my post below as you  posted your response.

Doug,

the carbs in your our photos are Mikuni’s.  The British guys seem to like them enough for Moss to have put together a kit at one point.  I’ve installed a few here and there on triumphs, MG’s, and at least one Austin Healey.  They employ a sliding door instead of a butterfly, so throttle response is a bit better than the SU/Zenith Strombergs on the Brit. Are I mentioned.  They idle great (all else being in good order), but don’t expect much more than cool factor for being different.  You’ll have to devise some type of cable throttle system to get them to work right as well.  Once they’re tuned, there isn’t much to go wrong, kinda like DCOE’s.   If it were me, unless you just enjoy playing with jetting, designing linkage, and working through getting things working right I’d just go with a 32/34 or a set of DCOE’s.

Just my 2 cents.

Travis

That's hot. Nice work. Custom manifolds?

The cheap ass (maybe also naïve? asinine?) side of me is wondering if it's possible to find some old superbike carbs and save myself a few hundred bucks over dual Webers.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
