FYI all the short neck diff covers used on 2002s (from VIN 1664761 on) will work on your (presumably) E21 LSD...

Thanks for the detailed info Mike 

I just purchased a 1969 2002 that is only a few VIN numbers before the switch  Don't have the details yet but I was told that the long neck short neck switch occurred in early 1969

I'm planning on a  5-speed conversion so I acquired a 74 subframe and 3.64 open short neck diff of the job 

Only problem is the diff lacks the rear cover so I'm on the hunt  No hurry 

This is a long term project.  Planning on Fuel injection and Turbo with about 8 lbs of boost

My own '69 was the 40th one built with a short neck diff at 1664801 and was assembled on 4 Feb '69, so either BMW cheated a bit on Federally mandated changes required on all cars built after 1 January '69, or they didn't build any US spec 2002s in January 1969. 

 

There were a number of small changes made at or near 1664761 (the changeover VIN)--three speed vs two speed heater, a different torsion bar setup for the trunk lid (the plastic caps on the arms were eliminated), a single, fender-mounted brake fluid reservoir that served both halves of the M/C plus the clutch, etc etc.

Uh... I’m going with the “BMW cheated” option, Mike! ?

 

VIN 1664492 was the first U.S.-spec 2002 manufactured in the 1969 calendar year. So at least 258 long-neck 2002’s rolled off the assembly line in January 1969 (VIN’s 1664492 through 1664750) before the short necks arrived with VIN 1664751. (I went back to the parts manuals and found 1664750 as the last long-neck, rather than 1664760.) Admittedly, 300-or-so U.S. 2002’s produced in the month of January 1969 seems singularly unimpressive, so perhaps BMW was struggling with this changeover...

The small details escape me at this point but now you give me a list of things to look for


My records, fairly thin, show VIN 1663591 as being manufactured on October 16, 1968 and this forum’s Registry shows VIN 1664158 as manufactured on November 28, 1968. So I confidently predict that BMW Group Archives will confirm your car’s manufacture between those two dates, perhaps in late October 1968.
