Sound Deadening & Carpet Fitting

1602bmw

Recommended Posts

I'm going to take on the challenge of removing the old & fitting a new sound deadening and carpet set next week on my 1602. I have a pre-cut carpet set and a 4 metre (by 1m 37cm) roll of sound deadening that isn't pre-cut. As with everything I am doing on the car, it's my first go!

Any tips/tricks/things to avoid? Will I need any special tools or glue's/sprays/massive amount of patience?

This is the carpet set:

And this is the sound proofing:

If you're gonna remove that thick tar sheet from the floorpan, be prepared to either go through a lot of scraping and swearing, or get some dry ice.  You'll still scrape and swear, but just not as much.  Should be lots of discussion in the archives on how to do this, but dry ice seems to be the most popular way.

Dry ice and a good hammer!

Scrap, white spirits, sand, then POR or other product.

I laid my stuff down didn’t stick it to the floor pan, didn’t  think I needed to.

Get it up the firewall / front footwell as far as possible. Make sure you don’t have any leaks, but not sticking it down will make sure you don’t have a rust trap. Lots of modern foam based lightweight products now which save the weight of the types like dynamite as well.

Large foam pieces under the rear seat if you don’t have a sub!

loads of info and pics on here, do a search you will like it! ?

Not recommended for anywhere in a car, especially in the floor between your legs ?...Think Sydney tii means Dynamat.  Sorry, just couldn't resist!

And if you get items shipped in Styrofoam peanuts, bag 'em up and stuff tht under the back seats.  Very effective sound insulation and the price is right...

Try a brand of roof seal tape instead of Dynamat.  Virtually the same product at much less cost for the same amount  Lowe's, Home Depot, or internet.  I used Peel and Seal (https://m.roadkillcustoms.com/inexpensive-dynamat-alternative/).

Use only about 5-10% (1 or 2 sq in?) of the surface of the black side - just enough to hold each piece in place; carpet weight should do the rest.  That way, it will not be as much of a pain for you or the subsequent owner to remove it if such is necessary in the future.

I recently installed an only02 carpet kit with similar felt sound deadening.

After a lot of internet research, I decided to use the "40oz jute auto carpet backing" sold a few places. It came out great and didn't have any off gassing or chemical smells..

I used 3M Hi-Strength 90 as the adhesive for the felt and the carpet, generally not using too much, just tacking things in place.

My advice if I were doing it again would be to buy a pair of new heavy duty scissors and a fresh utility knife. The felt is especially hard to cut evenly.

One thing that wasn't obvious to me is that you can tuck the extra length of the lower part of the side panels under the floor panels. Be careful not to cut these lower edges too short as the felt compresses and can expose a gap.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
