No Spark .....help resuscitate my 02 pls...

@TobyB I put a small Trailer LED Lamp in series as you mentioned....the light stays on with ignition..and during attempts to crank...no blinking on/off ...whatcha think?  Thx

 

If it's connected where the coil belongs,

as in it's getting ground from coil (-),

 

something is shorted in your points.  This is easy to troubleshoot, now you're back on points:

The coil has 12v all the time, and the points switch the ground.

 

Unhook everything else- tach, condenser, noise suppressors, aftermarket head unit, fog lights, etc from

the points connection.  With a meter, or that trailer light (it's a fine tester, btw) use the points as a ground,

roll the engine over to where they're closed, and the light is on,

and open them manually with an insulated something- or other.

 

  The light should go off.  If it does NOT, something's shorted inside your distributor.  The arm

should be isolated from the base, and the contact on the points base should be grounded.  It's not

too hard to get something that bridges that connection, OR a shorted condenser.

When you get that working, try connecting the condenser (disconnecting it can be as easy as unscrewing it's hold- 

down screw and making sure it doesn't touch anything).

 

If the light still goes out when you open the points, you're in business- connect the points to coil (-),

12v to coil hot, stick a plug in the coil wire and make sure the plug's well- grounded to the block, and open 

the points manually again.  THIS time, make quite sure you're insulated from the points as you open them!

They should spark a little, and you SHOULD get a nice, blue >snap< of a spark.

 

If it's an anemic little yellow >pft<, then your condenser may have condensed its last.  You DO need a condenser

that's in good shape to get spark with a Kettering ignition- it snubs the primary side of the coil so that the

secondary can develop current through the plug.  This from both books and experience....

 

Once you have a nice blue spark out of the coil, things move on to the timing phase- 

but this might get you started.
