Those look like 2000-2005 era VW/Audi coils and the boots are already quite long.  The plus side is they're very cheap and perform well.

j.m.  You don't happen to know what the pinout is at the coil?  Searching but haven't hit on it yet. Jim

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

I drive a b5 daily, I can throw a multimeter on there.  My coils are the style before those but it's a common 'upgrade' to swap those in with a new sub harness.  I believe only the connectors are different.

There are two grounds, one for the signal and one to valve cover, a +12v, and the spark signal itself.  I believe they are the 2.0L TSI coils, can find pigtails all over the internet.  The signal wire is a smaller gauge than the rest and will help you orient pin 3CP_harness_pinout.thumb.png.79c9944d6fc8b102cd7060c85c3486fa.png

Thanks a million.  I had 1 and 4 figured out, but 2 & 3 can be hard to determine.  Had I dug further into the harness at the salvage yard pin 3 would have been evident.

Update Time!!

Bill is making progress on the seats. Here are a couple of photos. He will be doing the rear seat with this same style of horizontal pattern. The brown color does not show well in these photos. It is a deeper and richer color than you see here.

I will be up at Racecraft later this week to go over some things with Terry and I promise I will get a bunch of photos and post them here so stay tuned!

But I was really expecting some more NSFW suspension / chassis / engine porn...  I didn't manage my expectations very well.

Dave,

When I'm up there Thursday I'll see what I can do to satisfy your longings and expectations. ?

Big update. I travelled up to Seattle and visited the Racecraft shop yesterday. Jim and Terry had already left for the race in Spokane this weekend. Travis was there working on my car and Peter Gleeson's 02 Turbo. It was great to spend some time with Travis. He does some amazing work, as you will see.

A few posts ago I had some pictures of the trunk and the battery box Travis fabricated. Here is how it looks without the floor pieces in place. We copied the wood structure employed in the Turbo to raise the floor a bit. In the Turbo this was necessary to provide clearance for the larger fuel tank. We did it to provide clearance for all the extra plumbing we needed for the FI system. The battery cover will be going out for powder coating later.

I must apologize to Dave. The engine porn I promised him could not be done as Travis is in the middle of wiring the engine and the FI stuff so it looks a pretty messy. Sorry Dave. :-(  But sttill, I think it all looks pretty good. The way Travis polished the cam cover to pop off the lettering and ribbing still takes my breath away. We were able to fit the engine without cutting any of the core support. To do that we were able to move the engine back further than most have done when putting an S14 into an 02. Hopefully this helps the weight distribution as well.

The rear brakes are done. We opted for Wilwood calipers. It all came together pretty well, I'd say. It should give me the stopping power I need with the extra HP.

We have also test fit the wheels to see how the spacing we calculated will work out. I'm really pleased with how it has turned out and the look we have achieved. We are still considering tire choices.

Our goal is to have the car ready for Legends in August. I will admit this is pretty ambitious given where the car is right now. One big variable is the upholsterer. I have told Terry and Travis that I am not interested in rushing things just to make that deadline. The car looks so good. I'd hate to jeopardize the quality of things just to try and be there. There is always next year!

  • 5 months later...

t's been a long 5 months since my last update. Between racing, some health issues, and harvest it's been a very busy 5 months.

I finally got up to Racecraft yesterday to swap one car for another and get a bead seat fitted in the swift. While there I got caught up on progress on the Blu '02.

Terry hasn't had much time to work on the car. He has been occupied with travel and support for the racing customers (me included). What time he has had he has spent on wiring the car and the fuel injection system:

S14inBlu02.thumb.jpg.9e715ceff017fe5d9f3096363e2d405d.jpg

The problem is that he has had no real large blocks of time to devote to this job. He will get a couple of days to work on it but then it might be 2 weeks before he can get back at it. It takes a few hours then to get reacquainted with where he is at and what needs to be done.

He did find a proper Alpina steering wheel for the car. I think it is perfect- just the right look and patina:

Over in the corner was a quiet reminder of the dangers of vintage racing. My #34 Hyde Park 2002 suffered a big hit at the Charity Challenge a few weeks ago from a DATSUN???? Yikes! It hit on the RR wheel, climbed the side of the car and ran down the door and hit the RF fender. This is the only evidence left of the incident.

The car is already repaired and off at the painters. Thank you Jim and crew!

Now that the racing season is over Terry will have a lot more time to devote to this build. Stay tuned.

It's been a long while since I posted anything on this build. If you saw the video I posted a few weeks ago you will know that the engine is now running in the car. That process turned out to be more complicated than we thought it would. Travis and Jim stayed at it and finally worked out all the wiring issues.

The next issue has been wheel and tire fitment. It took a while but Jim finally has the proper tire and wheel size all sorted out to fit on the car. The problem we're still up against is that the retro Hardy and Beck centers I bought for the car just will not work unless we add about 1"+ thick spacer. This is because they are so flat on the back side (see photo below).

IMG_6076.thumb.jpg.41e910f71676926a487234933e08b665.jpg

We have discovered these particular H&B wheels were meant to fit a late 70's 320i which of course have much different brakes and hub offsets. In the photo with the 2 centers next to each other you can see the H&B center on the left and a more typical 2002 center on the right. You can see the center on the right has that offset machined into it creating about 1" of room for brake calipers and inner wheel half clearance to the rotor. Even if we were to switch the car back to stock brakes the H&B centers still don't fit.

Jim even tried switching the car to the rotors and calipers that we run on the race cars and they still are not close to fitting. Running a little bit of spacer, maybe up to about say a 1/4" thick might not be horrible but a full inch is just not in line with the quality of the rest of the car. Then the other more disqualifying issue is that it will end up with so much offset it will look like a front wheel drive car once we get the wheel halves fit.

The wheels show below are some Jim had on hand for another 2002 project he is working on. They are 15" with the correct off-set for our brake and suspension set-up and they look good on the car, filling the wheel arches properly:

IMG_6073.thumb.jpg.a741ad1b6c344257e824ffe2a203be23.jpg

We have found a maker of bespoke wheels in England and will be ordering up a set of their BBS basket wheel look-a-likes in black for the car:

Our plan is still to have the car ready for Legends in August. Keep your fingers crossed!

Interesting on the H&B wheels.  The others look great as well.  Legends?  Fortunately that is a long way off, I would guess there won't be any motorsport events in the next few months....hopefully that changes, amazing to see what a great spot we were in just a few short weeks ago to where we are now..  Pretty brutal.

We have a CSRG race (David Love Memorial) in a few weeks at Sears Point. I'm guessing it will be canceled. Then there's the Sonoma Speed Festival in May. I have Luigi entered. I hold out more hope for that one.

We shall see.

We were finally able to pick up the seats from the upholsterer. It only took him 2 years!!!! No names to protect the guilty.

I'm very happy with how they turned out. I'm just disappointed they took sooooo long. Door panels will be ready next week- he says.

We ordered the wheels from Britain. With all that is going on they can't give us an ETA on arrival.
