2000CS tear down started today

After 9 months of acquiring parts and lining up experts to help... the resto began in earnest yesterday afternoon.  Barney graciously offered a space at his personal shop, tools, and his good humor so that I could begin the restoration.  This '67 was redone back in the '80s in San Francisco, then it spent 30+ years baking in the sun of Albuquerque, NM.  The plan is for new paint and interior....sooooo, everything has to be removed if this is to be done correctly.  We pounced all over it and knocked a good bit of it out today with massive assistance from Barney and good guy, Greg Resa.  Trim is off, lights out, doors gutted, most of the interior is out.  We'll be back at it again this weekend, but I'm thrilled to have the project off to a good start.  Everything we've inspected so far is very dry and rust free.  I am very thankful for such a good car.

I have lofty goals for this car... I sure hope they can be achieved.  Barney is a huge motivator, that guy is always moving forward.

I'm now pouring over the blue parts manual and trying to source the odd trim and seals.  Some are NLA...of course; fortunately, the e9 forum has plenty of folks who've blazed this trail and should be able to help me along.

Yea, Jim...every time I dig deeper into this car the more I realize how blessed I was finding it. The driver floor pan has just the slightest rust in it....that's it. The spare well is like new, all the usual spots that rot are completely free of rust. I know there must be some old repairs, but so far things look very solid.

Here's the boss inspecting the progress this morning and solving the world's problems with Barney. It was a great morning with more pieces removed.

More progress every day... windows out, headliner out, etc...  gotta start disconnecting things for the planned engine removal on Friday morning.

I have to show how dry this car is.... It was torn down and redone in the mid-'80s.  I have Polaroids of it stripped down in a driveway.  Well, these guys must have done something right.  We pulled the big glass yesterday and look at the lower windshield frames... this after sitting outside in ABQ for 30+ years... I am really astonished how dry this car is.

and the the rear side window under the chrome trim... no rust

More progress today again with tremendous help from Barney and Greg. Engine/transmission is out. Dash out, heater box out, pedal box out, steering column out... Spent a lot of time bundling and labeling wire connections and ziplocks labeled with hardware and parts. Very little left to remove at this point, maybe another 1/2 day, then we can begin body prep.

Put a few hours into the car today. Wiring harness tagged and looped up out of the way. Gas tank out. Carpet out. Brake lines out. Good progress. IMG_8255.thumb.JPG.8bb7062fa865c99ee33ecb80b9965436.JPG

I'll get after it this weekend with a shop vac, then power wash everything, especially the engine bay and undercarriage.

It is!!

There's a bit of bubbling in the driver's rocker and small spots in the driver's rear floorboard. As the paint comes off, we'll know more. I'm not worried... it's solid.

That's usually Ray's job as Mr Scope Creep... I have so many additional items I'd like to add... E brake upgrade could be one of them!
