Tii struts with Volvo callipers

I was told it's not possible to instal Volvo callipers on Tii struts with vented e21 discs. Well I own a Tii and it came as half finished project with vented discs and Volvo callipers.

 

How do I clarify this? Also would e24 callipers be a better braking option than my current volvo's? I'm looking to upgrade.

The Volvo bolt spacing on the mounts is a half- inch closer together than the tii.

The BMW caliper is IDENTICAL to the Volvo, except that the spacing is wider (the offset may be .070" different, too)

 

If you have calipers bolted to your struts, measure the spacing between the bolts, center to center.  3" is 2002, 3.5"  is tii.

 

If you have tii struts, you already have BMW E24 (or various other M30 engined sedan/coupe) calipers.

 

Neither say Volvo nor BMW on them- usually ATE, but maybe Girling, too.

It seems like the po replaced the oem tii struts with basic 02s. My plans were to upgrade brakes and suspension to coilovers. I can easily have access to E24 635Ci calipers but I guess they won't fit now.

 

My main issue is that running 15" wheels and Volvo calipers on smaller diameter spindle shaft than tii, would is put stress on bearings?

 

Should I start looking for tii trusts to upgrade brakes from Volvo's?

I don't know of anyone that has broken a standard 2002 front spindle (this side of a major impact that probably would have broken a Tii one as well)  There are a lot of 2002's running around on 15" wheels and even some crazy offsets that put even more load on the spindles that have not had any issues.  If this is a street car, with occasional track play days and you are running reasonable size tires and wheels with reasonable offsets I'm sure you will be fine with the standard struts. If money is no object go for the Tii struts.

The standard struts are pretty tough- I raced on them with RA1's for 3 or 4 seasons, and just had to regrease every 3 or 4 weekends.

I'd be perfectly comfortable with them on any street car with a naturally aspirated M10.

bummer.

 

normal struts will be fine.  as toby said,  plenty of racers use them.

Highly boosted turbo M10 here. Solid braking is my main concern, then coilovers.

haha I meant it will be a concern if I'm not able to upgrade to coilovers and better calipers like APRacing. If I can do these with my current struts (being non tii) then my problems are solved.

You can do a Willwood conversion on standard struts. Doesn't Lee from Massive brakes do a conversion as well as Ireland?

 

Heard a lot of negative feedback from muscle car racers on club days. Was told APRacing is good. But I need 3.5" mounting hole space for APRacing.

 

On the other note, is it possible to use E21 struts on Tii? Was told stub axles are same.
