5spd swap rookie mistake

Well, I thought I'd buy a 4-bolt shortened drive shaft in anticipation of installing my 5spd. I have a 4-bolt trans flange that I was going to swap into my gearbox...until I saw that the rear shaft splines weren't the same.

So, what now? Do I sell the 4-bolt shaft and get a 3-bolt or is there a 4-bolt trans flange out there with fine splines?

Thanks in advance

...it's been a while, but I have a vague recollection of the 4- speed fine spline being different than the 5- speed fine spline.

I have a firmer recollection of a very old thread about this subject.

I am positive that the 3 and 4 bolt 5- speed flanges interchange.

I am convinced that the 3- bolt guibo is thinner.

I am now going for a bike ride, as every BMW that we own is currently not working.

heh

From experience, the fine spline output flange is better than the coarse spline.  I had a coarse spline flange fail on my '73, when the car had less than 60k miles on it.  When removed, the "teeth" on the flange's inner ring were completely gone.  IIRC it was due to poor torquing of the flange retaining nut at the factory and/or a poorly heat-treated batch of flanges.  Bottom line was they had to replace the tranny output shaft as well as the flange with a fine thread setup.  No problems after that.

Again, IIRC the changeover from coarse to fine was made in early January 1974.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
