Hey all, 

I know this isn't 02 specific, but this is the best place I know.  My 325iC has developed a rattle that only appears around 2k, idle or under load.  Disconnected all accessory belts and still there.  Put a stethoscope on it and coming from upper timing chain cover.  I'm 95% sure that the timing belt tensioner has shat itself, just looking for conformation. (belt has 30k).  I can get a good view of the lower part which is in the video.  I've never had the front covers off the M20, but from RealOEM it looks like the lower part of the belt is what goes over the tensioner.  I really don't think it should be this loose, yes/no??? I was using VERY light pressure with the screwdriver.

No thats way to loose I would also suspect the tensioner too, anyway don't run the engine until you replace the belt and tensioner it not hard to do but a lot of stuff to remove to get the covers off but it sounds like you have a good start on that.

If the belt's not taut, don't start the engine again.

 

It's easy enough to get to once you have the accessories off.

The latest crop of tensioners have been failing mre frequently.
