you can also unscrew the bolts holding the subframe to the frame rails about a half inch each. this lowers the engine just enough to get some room

 

just to be more clear here...

 

in my experience, a half inch is about as much as you want to go and still have enough thread to hold the subframe up.  always have a jack under the subframe when doing this!

 

and....watch the steering shaft connection.  best to loosen the coupler bolts and slide the coupler up the shaft.

 

that said...just that extra half inch makes tranny install, or installing the clutch slave, much easier.

You pay have to put the transmission in gear and turn the output shaft to make the splines on the input mate with the splines on the clutch disc. That will make it so things wont mate :P

Hey guys this morning I felt much better and got back under the car. After lowering the subframe everything is in line now and i just have to wiggle things in to place, hopefully finishing the transmission job tomorrow. 2 question before i do: 1 Does the flywheel go on in a particular way concerning the ball bearing on it or the OT line? 2 Should i place any grease on the throw out bearing arms. Also here is my glorious triple jack setup. Yes i only have 1 good jack. :)

I just did this job and by turning the front wheels to full right lock it gave me enough room to slide transmission into engine without removing the center arm. My front end was up on Race ramps not on jack stands so this might have made a slight difference.

Hey guys just wanted to say thanks, just got the transmission in today. In reality it wasn't that hard, I did however have a very easy to over look (to the bad mechanic) problem. I had an extra sleeve( the ones that go in-between the bell housing and motor) that the bolts run threw, my transmission had 2 and my motor had pulled one from my 4 speed when i removed it: The result was 2 pieces of metal that could never join together leaving a 2-3 inch gap. Aside from that I also took a large 2x4 and used it to straighten out the engine from the passengers side.
