body and interior 3M Chrome Deluxe Mylar for Interior Door Panels

Hi All,

 

Brad Cole no longer sells the 3M Chrome Deluxe Mylar strips for the interior door panels.  

 

Daniel (dpecsok) no longer sells his Interior Door Panel Chrome/Mylar Strip Kits either.

Does anybody know where i can find the 3M Chrome Deluxe Mylar material?

i bought a roll of chrome tape on ebay for just a few bucks and have done a lot of door panels and still have what looks like the whole role

 

google chrome or stainless tape...it'll be wider but that makes it easier...trim with a utility knife

Not sure if 3M still makes the chrome mylar film, but there is a company in Los Angeles that specializes in these types of films and it caters to body shops that customize and/or restore cars.

 

They carry a chrome film which they call "thermoformable film" so it may actually be easier to use on the ends of the strips on a 2002 door panel, where the strips have a round end.

Great idea Esty.  I did a bit of research on eBay and here are the 3 options I came up with. Which would you choose?

that is the ebay seller i bought from...the same tape...it's is much easier to apply because it's wider...just cut slightly longer than needed, stick one end, along one edge of the door trim, stretch and remove backing as you apply, then trim the excess from the bottom of the trim

 

or that's what worked for me your technique may be better..good luck

Aardvark still sells the Mylar tape too.

I think it's like $33.

You gotta call them because it's only listed with the door panels

However I'm sure esty's idea will work just fine.

To revive an old thread, I tried the mylar tape from aardvarc and had all sorts of issues with the corners and such lifting. Then I tried aluminum tape and that worked better but I have been having a heck of a time trying to get all the wrinkles out. Has anyone tried chrome spray paint? I see there are some chrome paint systems on the market, but wasn't sure if it is appropriate for this application.

that's what I would do. masking looks simple. looks like you can tuck the masking tape right up into the edge. paper over the rest. my only concern would be any constant rubbing, which a shot of clear could help. that may not be an issue

In my experiences with chrome spraypaint for my gauge cluster housing, it was damn terrible. it does not want to stick, and when I put a coat of clear over it, it dulled to a battleship grey color.

as with any surface, sand, prime, sand before paint. If clear is needed, test it first. I'd probably pass on the clear, though

 

Another option would be to light sand and polish with a drummel and some neverdull, protect the vinyl with thin pieces of sheet metal, tucked up to the section you're working on. delicate, but not impossible
