Mahle 10:1 Pistons Found For 121 Head

Recommended Posts

Lars,

"90 mm" is specified as 3rd oversize in the factory shop manual.  They were available "for awhile", but quickly dropped 'cause BMW went to the E12 head--and different pistons.  (no sense makin' 'em  if there's no chance of sellin' 'em).

What ya doin' with all those 1st oversize pistons?  Can you still find blocks that aren't worn out after 42 years and lots of uncared for miles/kilometers?  Lucky you.

mac,

I know about E12 neads and I know about E21 2,0 heads also.

My geman factory shop manual does not tell anything about a third overbore, there is only 1st and 2nd. Is the US manual different?

To my experience 2002 automatics turned out as good donor cars for blocks still with standard bore. Maybe those were not driven as hard, I´d think. Some of mine do even need no overbore but just a slight re-honing.

And I do always collect some parts in my private storage if I can get them cheap. You never know when you might need them.

Regards, Lars.

Jim,

my question wasn´t if these pistons were available from Mahle. My question was if Mahle pistons this big were ever available from BMW.

Regards, Lars.

Sorry Lars.  I must have misunderstood the thread.

Pistons are in. Turns out I was orginally incorrect. These are 4th oversize or approx 90mm. Either way they are going in. Same as jgerock found for his. I also have a question for you 40 dcoe guys. I found a set of 126-127 40 dcoes from a friend. From what I understand for our 02s we are looking for 40 DCOE 2 or 40 DCOE 151 is this correct? Will the 126-127 set work or should I pass.

Thanks again for the advice...

G

Lookit the date on those- they DID make another run!  I love the rumor mill that says

'those are gone forever, you know'

The different numbers reflect the progression drilling patterns.  It's hard to know without

seeing the holes if they're similar to what 'everyone' uses- some are plenty close for

gub'ment work, and some are really, really different.

In my book, if they're Italian and in decent shape, they're worth at least a few hundred...

Jim, How'd these work out?

Scott - they worked out perfectly fine - until I chipped one of the rings during installation.  Had to buy some aftermarket Deves rings to replace the Mahle originals.

Engine is still being broken in (have just over 500 miles on it).
