...and I think that there's not enough room for the 'grip and squeeze the spring' type- tool-  I have one,

and was never able to make it work on a BMW head.

those spring compressors like the one you linked to don't work very well, the angle on the BMW head makes it almost impossible. The giant C-Clamp looking ones have worked the best for me, you sometimes have to use an old socket or make an extender to clear the top of the head with the tool though depending on how deep the top of the tool is.

so you dont risk damaging a good valve guide  - please grind the flare off the stem end before attempting

to push it through the guide

 

you should investigate the condition of the 7 other stem tips and adjuster ecentrics.........
