Valve Cover Breather

I swapped my old air cleaner to a Redline Chrome Air cleaner.  The previous air cleaner has the valve cover breather vented into it.  The new one also has an adapter to fit into it as well.  Do I need to vent into the air cleaner or can I just install a stand alone filter?  It would seem that the hot nasty air would do nothing good for the carb but venting into the carb would get rid of some of the smell in the cabin.

vent it to a catch can with filter on it.  do not just put a filter on the cover....unless you drive like you are in a funeral procession.  if you drive briskly and run the revs up, oil WILL come out that hole in the cover and exit through the filter onto the back of your engine. if you are lucky, it may even drop into the timing hole and make a mess of your clutch.... :(

Aside from concocting my own can or dropping a tube to the ground (which I would prefer not to do).  What is a reasonable solution?  I see ones for sale from $25 bucks up to $250 bucks.  I have no problem with buying pricy parts that give me some benefit but this seems like a necessary evil.

 

I saw this one for like 60 bucks that doesn't look obnoxious.

where did you find the one you have pictured? This is something I need to do also. I have a small filter mounted on the valve cover. It is getting a mist of oil all over the back of the engine.

I thought the purpose of the valve cover vent was to direct those gases back into the intake and burn them in the combustion process?  You know, help the air we breath every little way possible.  So collecting the vented oil and keeping out of my KF system seems like a good idea unless the oil helps in some way.  But what about the gasses?  Is there a way to put them back into the intake system as designed?  Is this a bad idea?

You can always use a catch can without a filter on top which is connected back to the air filter. This should have an oil / air separator (like being packed with wire wool) which catches most of the oil prior to the gas being drawn back to the inlet via inlet draw.

The catch can has an intake and out port. You can vent the blow by into the can, collecting any oil then rout the output hose to your KF system or as in my case to the carburetor for any left over gases..

ive seen lots of people run an little air filter on that breather outlet, i thought it didnt harm anything. is it really that bad of an idea? where do most of your guys mount your catch cans?

 

You've likely seen them before they've been driven much.  It just makes a big mess as oil spills out and gunks up the back half of the engine.  As for mounting .... where ever there is room.

Quick project tonight. Needed a crankcase breather since I deleted the stock system. Picked up $35 Moroso breather bottle tonight, along with 4 ft of 1/2in heater hose.
As much as it appears otherwise, I really don’t like to drill more holes in my car…so I decided to reuse the threaded holes where the coil was mounted.

Made up another little bracket out of aluminum bar stock that uses those bolts.

And mounted bottle using 3.5in hose clamp. Will add a second clamp for security, but it is pretty solid. Ran the 1/2in hose from the “u” I made at the crankcase to the -6an fitting on the side of the bottle. Done!
