That's right, 3M makes a mostly clear Ceramic tint that does a good job. The early generations of ceramic tine where not as high performing or of as high of quality as the new ones, just be sure to request the 3M tint when you get it done. There are three grades ranging from almost clear to slightly tinted just in case you do want a bit of tint on your car.

it's an absolute bitch to remove--just went thru that on my E30--a Nevada car with very dark tint. If you have a "modell 71" car it came with lightly tinted glass all around; earlier cars had clear glass.

Thanks for all those who replied to my poll. I'm going to get the windows tinted when I get my 71. Just can't see letting it sit in a parking lot somewhere (when it does come out of the garage) with the Florida sun beating down heating up the inside & fading the interior. I'll take it to the same place my Toyota salesman sent me to when I got the windows of my Yaris tinted. Might not be original, but the car will cool down quicker & I won't run the risk of a sun-faded interior...

I would have the tint done before the glass is installed. The edges will look cleaner due to the glass not having borders like late model cars. Otherwise the cuts will butt up next to the rubber and you may have an inconsistent line. Also on the rear pop out glass, it's a challenge to get a clean line at the C pillar edge.
