M2 madness

dang, long time since i posted in this thread....actually a long time since it touched the M2.

changed the oil today, then went to flush the brakes.  found piston seal on right side rear wilwood caliper leaking.  no problem, i will just rebuild it.

not.  when i called wilwood for some replacement rubber bits, found out they don't sell them for the CPB calipers.  it seems they deem those calipers too hard to rebuild, so they require them to be sent to wilwood for rebuild.  ARGH!  3-4 week turnaround time.  so much for taking the M2 to the track next weekend.  pulled the calipers off to be sent in.

then pulled the M3 out of the trailer,  flushed the brakes on that car and found 4 tires with some tread left  to burn off next weekend.

it is good to have spares.... B)

This sounds like how I ended up with 5 mountain bikes, so I wouldn't miss out on a big ride or a vacation. Hidden cost of track days; multiple cars or lots of spares. Not cheap either way.

not for a while......distracted with house construction...and the M2 is down hard with now rear brakes.

a bit unhappy with wilwood at this point.....called to check on status of my CPB calipers.  i sent them in when the rep said they could only be rebuilt by wilwood.  apparently now i find out they CAN'T BE REBUILT AT ALL!    when the CPB's need rebuilding, like for a new $1 rubber seal, you have to buy an entirely new caliper to replace it.  that is just absurd.

DO NOT BUY WILWOOD CPB CALIPERS!!!!!  (they are unfortunately the key element of an otherwise nice IE rear brake kit.)

Ooph. Do you think that shop in VA which rebuilds vintage hydraulic components can do it? ... name escapes me now.

Good luck,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

chatted with wilwood again.  Dustin was very helpful.  worked out an arrangement to get the leaky caliper replaced, but this will be the last time i use the CPB's.  gotta start work on engineering a different rear brake solution that allows retention of a parking brake.  guess i could always use the VW calipers!

You can probably come up with a better solution than mine, but I made a spacer for my VW calipers.

ETA: In this position, I can bleed the caliper without removing it and it's not in the way of the shock boss. just FYI.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
