I think you are referring to the fuel pick up/sender at the tank. First, disconnect the wires on top. When we did this at the Vintage, I recall using two long flat head screw drivers for leverage. I think we crossed them and positioned them on the edges of the sender lid to unscrew it counterclockwise. I hope I am explaining this okay, but if not... I am sure someone else will. It took a while to drain the gas out of the sender and then the filter was at the bottom.

Exactly as you explained it. Fit the blades of the crossed flat screwdrivers into the "slots" on diametrically opposed sides of the sender. Now twist counterclockwise and it releases, like the lid off a jar.

The in-tank screen is at the bottom of the fuel pickup with the fuel lines, not the sender. The sender is just a float on a resistance wire.

No.

Usually, the screen is sitting loose at the bottom of the tank.

This is one of those jobs I try to do when the tank is near empty. It's also a good time to loosen the bung and drain any crud from the bottom of the tank.

Tips- Lift the sender or the pick up slowly- usually fuel inside the unit will pee out to the sides as you extract it. Have rags and a fire extinguisher handy.

Not getting picky but...

On tii's the nylon mesh screen is on the larger pickup (twist or bolt-in)

If your car smells like fuel, then this sealing o-ring under the pickup may need replacing.

Non-tii's have a smaller mesh filter on the bottom of the sending unit/pickup

Is the sealing o-ring under the pickup the same on all? I have a 75 automatic.

The sealing ring in my picture is only for the tii (larger) pickup.

There should be a smaller diameter sealing (o) ring for the sending unit. You will have to look it up on Real OEM or Penske parts for your car.

Jim,

You have other issues if you are using your 2002 trunk as an aviary.

I was going off of his signature that mentions a 75 2002A, but, yeah, the tii tank innerds is different.

Also, if you replace seals on the sender or pick up or whatever and you still have a raw fuel smell in the car, start tracing the evap hose, canister, and the fuel filler boot for the source of the odor. I have found cracks on the under side of the filler boot, while the top was still in tact.

Perfect pic for a photo caption-

"Well, damned if I can tell where that chirping noise is coming from."

Or

"OK. The Haynes manual says assembly is the reverse of removal."

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
