  1. What grade? Good point. I know there are various grades indicated by dot placement and letter codes on the crown, but I never really thought about it b/c none of the bolts I have used so far have starred in any major supporting roles, just holding lightweight stuff together. I bought what Ace Hardware had in its bins. If I use SS bolts and nuts for anything major (suspension, engine, etc.) I'd better check the grade. 2002#2
  2. Friends, Sorry I gave you the incorrect area code for the owner of the green 2002. The correct number is 704-418-5865. I hope that one works. 2002#2
  3. Cleaning the Engine Bay on My Inka 1974 2002tii... Vicleonardo1, You might find some ideas here. I divided "Cleaning Up the Engine Bay" into three parts: Dirt, Hoses, and Things. I like the used-but-clean look, sort of a combo of new and old, so will not paint or powdercoat anything. · Dirt: I gave the engine a preliminary cleaning from the valve cover up. Detergent, degreaser, wire brush, etc. Scoured the intake plenum and valve cover with Scotchbrite and 000 steel wool. Big difference. · Lines: I replaced all fuel and vacuum hoses with as-original-as-possible equivalent lines (rubber, cloth-covered rubber, or wire-reinforced); rerouted the 3 vacuum air housing/intake plenum/distributor lines; rerouted the FI-to-throttle body hose under all four intakes. · Things: used new SS screw clamps on fuel and vacuum hoses; installed a new washer pump; gave the fuse box a good cleaning and a new cover; replaced the 3 rubber cowl drain tubes. NOTE: Every time I remove a nut or bolt to do something anywhere in the car, I try to replace the removed nut or bolt with a SS equivalent, especially those which were painted over in a repaint years ago. NOTE: I always wanted a red/Inka/orange-red (whatever color it is) Turbo inst cluster panel. However, I decided black (to match the dash) or grey (to match the grey Esty carpet) might look better. On this car, both look good. No more 1974 Monte Carlo Chevy wood grain! To Do · Do the big degreaser engine clean job from the valve cover down. · Install the new WN radiator, thermostat, and WP sitting in boxes in the corner of my garage. Should make front part of engine look better. · Replace battery cables. · Group and reroute spark plug wires. Anyone know where to obtain the SS clip-things which hold the wires and bolt onto the lower valve cover nuts ? PHOTOS · whole car during current refurbishment (Euro going on next week) · engine bay day of purchase 3 mo ago and today · crappy woodgrain cluster panel changed to BMW black (MUCH better!) · extra inst panel with grey cluster panel to match grey Esty carpet (can switch between the two inst clusters)
  4. I live in Cincinnati. The car is on a short service road parallel to US 35 between Jackson, OH, and the Ohio River. This ~30-mile section is obvious on a map. I did not think to see if it was a 2002 or a 2002tii. Probably 2002/carbed. We never discussed price. I spoke with the owner only briefly by phone: Mike Swing (704) 418-5865. Feel free to call him for details. I will be happy to check it out for you and send photos when I drive by there on Oct 12 or 14. If so, tell me what you want photographed or specific aspects you want me to examine. Larry Gray ldgray@fuse.net
  5. Not sure that will happen. Owner sounded steadfast re: selling the car whole. Did not examine the seats well at all; however, two photos suggest the seats might have some potential. Owner might have a change of mind re: parting out the car. Will let you know if I hear anything. 2002 #2
  6. All I wanted was the console (sad shape), so I did not do any sort of an inspection. Inside the trunk was dirty and a little scary. Have no idea re: its rust.
  7. ADDENDUM I will be going by the car on Oct 13 and 14. If any of you want me to look closely at some particular aspect of the car, send me a PM stating such. I will be happy to take photos and be your eyes for you. Its front grill turned up at the corners just a little and the headlights had just a little twinkle in them as I approached the car. I patted it on the hood and told it somebody out there wants it so just be patient for its new home. 2002#2
  8. I found an old squaretail 2002 on the side of the road in southern Ohio last week. Was among numerous other junked cars in a neat little line. The car looked pretty ratty to me, but I have seen and owned worse. Owner lived close by but Beware of Dog sign kept me from knocking on his door. Left a note re: perhaps obtaining some parts from same. He call me today and stated it was for sale and he rather not part it out. I did not ask year or price. Owner stated the cars runs. Interesting: the keys were in the ignition. Three photos attached: the car, console 1, and console 2. I have the owner's name and phone number. Send PM if you are interested. 2002#2
  9. Thanks, folks. The likely result will be increased current and increased heat. Not a productive combination. I will live and be happy with the stock 3W illumination. Thanks for your comments, sage advice, and wise counsel. 2002#2
  10. I am looking for a simple way to increase the illumination of my 74tii instrument cluster (already disassembled and cleaned same extensively; painted bright white inside). I think 12V 5W wedge bulbs are available. Do you know if they will do the trick? draw too much current? get too hot? Search on 2002FAQ did not yield answers to this particular question(s). Thanks, 2002#2
  11. I second the suggestion for using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (MCME). I used same plus Mr. Clean liquid cleaner and the combo worked wonders on a 41 yo headliner. See attached photos of (1) before and after headliner sections and (2) cleaned visor over a dirty headliner . Caveats: (1) requires much elbow grease and (2) be prepared to go through 3-4 MCME per single headliner. Our headliners are relatively rough and certainly can do a number on a MCME. Sorry about the position of the photos in the text. How do I prevent this the next time I post photos? 2002#2 Larry Gray
  12. Colin, Interested in the Blaupunkt. PM sent. 2002#2 Larry
  13. Most photos of the instrument panel almost make it look more Inka than red/cardinal. My question: How does one obtain or make such a panel? Supposedly, Hollywood Speedometer makes it or can make it. I have contacted them twice - no response. I thought about obtaining a cheap 1974 panel and attempting to paint it; however, I am certain it will ever look as customized/cool or appropriate as the real-deal Turbo panel which appears to be cut from a single block - not just a painted regular panel. Very, very nice, indeed. 2002#2 Larry
  14. Aaron, Seller did just as you stated and the caps released flawlessly. Thanks, so very much. Larry
  15. Thank you, Aaron. Just as I thought. I will pass the info and hope the seller can do. 2002#2 Larry Gray
  16. 02ers, I have bought what will likely be an extremely nice set of 14" Panasports with good tires. The rims have very nice black (plastic?metal?) center caps with Roundels. The shipper does not want the caps to come loose, be pilfered, or otherwise lost during shipping and has offered to remove them and ship them separately. A nice gesture, indeed. However, the shipper cannot seem to be able to remove them and I have neither seen nor manipulated Panasports, so I'm as useless as breasts on a boar hog. I do not have photos to help you answer my question. QUESTION: Do all Panasports take caps the same way? pressed on? pushed in from the back? other? Any suggestions re: how to instruct the seller to remove them? Thanks to you Fountains of Knowledge. 2002#2 Larry
  17. Yes. Try contacting him at aerkanli@psych.duhs.duke.edu.
  18. Thanks, pklym. Heater box will be pulled and inspected per you immediately after I finish repairing the Door Pop Monster. 2002#2 Larry
  19. Mintgrun, Keeping the tunnel cover, mustering courage to do the heater box, and moving on to finish the door brake. Thanks for the tips and conversation. 2001#2 Larry
  20. Thank you so very much, Tom and Jim. Excellent comments and suggestions. Will do. 1. Nails: Makes sense. Will eliminate them. I was going to toss the large cardboard saddle (nasty and gross). Any reason to keep it? A dumpster is calling… My car is missing the flat cardboard pieces at the end of the foot well. I now see their purpose: sound deadening (?) and flattening the curvy nature of the firewall. Carpet should fit better with the flat cardboard pieces, no? OK to proceed without them? Do you know a source for these cardboard things? My tabs are gone. 2. Pedal: Pedal box is bolted in and appears to be up-to-snuff. Same for the pedal nubs. Cleaned all. 3. Fuel Line: Already planned to replace. 4. Heater Box: Likely will bite the big one and do the inspection/overhaul thing. 5. Sound: Bought 4 rolls of Peel and Seal last month. Add Info: Before carpet install, I cut a window in the pass kick panel and repaired the ever-annoying Popping Door Brake Monster. Simple but not easy. Add question: At this stage, how does one prepare for future drilling required to install a long center console. I assume there will be some blind drilling or probing for holes through new carpet, no? 2002#2 Larry
  21. Group, After owning a 1973 2002 as a daily driver for 34 years, I gave it to a kid who appreciates it like I cannot describe. Good move, long story. Been sadly without a 2002 for the last 10 years, but always lusting for an Inka 2002tii. Found a 1974 tii 2 months ago. One owner for 41 years. A very nice car, not even dash cracks. Only $6,000. Superb car. Performs beautifully. Already have Euro bumpers to attach. See photos, one of which is the christening with Belgian beer. Anyway, the reason for the post is the following: During preparation of the interior for an Esty Carpet Kit (Thanks, Esty) install, several questions/issues manifested themselves. I present four of them to you and I seek your sage advice and wise counsel on same. 1. "Nails": Oddly enough, I found two rather stout and very firmly attached "nails" protruding about 1" (a) out of the top of the trans tunnel in front of the gear shift lever [see photo] and ( out of the floorboard at the junction of the firewall, transtunnel, and pass floor (one on tip of trans tunnel is visible in interior photo). What could these "nails" or extremely stiff wires and what are there purpose? NOTE: I removed the A/C components that were in the interior. 2. Heater Box: Any thing I should I do to the heater box while the interior is gutted? Overhaul it? 3. Vapor Lines?: I found two lines (one plastic line; one rubber line clamped to a plastic line) under the carpet and running up thru the firewall (see pass floor in interior photo). Are these vapor lines? Going where? To and from the engine? 5. Other: Any other interior items or issues I should be addressing while the interior is gutted and prior to installing carpet? I was never very partial to squaretails until I found this one. CSN advice is well-taken: "Love the one you're with." Thank you for being such fountains of knowledge. 2002#2 Cincinnati, Ohio
  22. For the life of me, I cannot find a way to list my vehicles. I assume I have to edit my profile; however, I cannot find a way to do it. Please help me. 2002#2
  23. This string originated with my comments and questions re: a W & N radiator. Some comments re: W & N quality, duty fees, DHL shipping, payment, etc. followed. Thanks for the comments and insights. Here is my follow-up: I ordered a radiator and the aforementioned items on Friday morning 7/17; the parts were delivered this morning, Tuesday, 7/20. All ordered parts were received and as described, parts were protected and packaged extremely well, there were no issues/invoices with/for duties/fees, and shipping (the well known $49) took only 4 days (Germany to my back door in 4 days [including the weekend]). Very impressive service all around, indeed! You folks were correct: W & N offers good products and great service. I suspect the transport time would have been only 2-3 days if the weekend had not been involved. Larry 2002#2
