  1. Beg to differ. A lot has to do with the compressor drive placement. My stock 73 with a behr configuration had no problem with even a 19mm and later a 25 mm bar. It was a tight fit, but it worked just the same. the bar i am referring to is the FACTORY bar for the turbo. 31 35 1 112 553. aftermarket bars are made to clear. the turbo is not. it is a tight fit with just the stock motor. i installed this bar on one of my cars, way back when the mark was 8 to 1 us dollar
  2. front is 15mm, rear is 16mm. the turbo had a 20mm front bar. if you have a/c, the turbo bar will NOT clear
  3. you should try 18 10 7 523 805. this is a flange nut(looks like a nut and a washer together) used on the v8's. it is heftier than the other exh nuts, but the neatest design of this nut is that it has an alloy helicoil. i used these on my mitsu galant vr4. the 4g63t engine is notorious for breaking exh studs. what happens is the heat cycles makes the nuts back off, and the vibrations crack and break the studs. with this nut, i think the alloy helicoil tightens up with heat. i never had broken studs after switching to this nut, and lots of my friends who also switched noticed it stopped the breaking studs.
  4. the vin numbers are not reliable for most bmw's before e12. you need to contact info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com and they can verify the number
  5. the problem with the febi pump is that it came in a plastic bag, and the relief valve would fall out. people would put it in upside down, and that caused the filters to blow out. iirc, the top side of the valve has a cut it it. i sold hundreds of these pumps when i worked at dallas european, i put them in my own cars.
  6. not from bmw. bmw has decided that the material for the lines is no longer available, and as the old stock runs out, they will all be straight black lines. these are made by lieblmotorsport, and there was a group buy a while ago. they may have them for stock tii, but there is very little difference with these lines http://www.lieblmotorsport.de/imguser/Ford%20KGF/BMW%20Alpina%20EDR%20640x273.jpg here is the group buy link: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,0/page,viewtopic/p,788085/highlight,/sid,78c3035979f5f4bab93b63990f2ff272/ bmw division of mobile traditions is adamant that the line works. i am not in agreement. but we are only the messengers
  7. actually, there is a cd for flat rates it is called KSD, and it has flat rate units for just about every job there is on a bmw, including install of a tii engine. however, if there are only a few shops in town, then they will go by what they want. and ksd does not specify how many minutes are in a flat rate unit, only how many units for a certain job. there is a formula the dealers are supposed to use, taking in to consideration all kinds of things, then they will come up with what THEIR unit is. a long time ago, someone decided that a unit was 6 minutes. the last i heard was that shops were using 10 minutes.
  8. there is only 1 trunk lid, early or late yes on emblem
  9. la jolla independent has forgotten a lot more than i know, but i know there aint no bmw(mahle, kolbenschmidt, even nural) 10:1 for e12. is the engine AT la jolla, or someone else has it? if so, then probably custom pistons, but custom pistons are generally forged, not cast. road rockets is a quality shop, watson knows his 2002's. if the engine is at la jolla, i am sure they would stand behind their work. if the engine is somewhere else, you should call la jolla and ask them about it. 858 488 1555, carl nelson, owner.
  10. where did you get the 10:1 pistons from? if they aint custom, they aint bmw. cause bmw dont have no e12 10:1. now, 121ti head DID have 10:1.
  11. you can get REAL CHEAP, and you can get excellent quality. you cannot get both. here are some: http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=2583&mospid=47141&btnr=31_0436&hg=31&fg=05
  12. there is a place used to be called absolute motor works, owner dan kaufmann. has a couple tii's, bmw factory tech. i think they may have changed names. ask him to tell you about the tornado http://www.amwbmw.com/
  13. probably 20 years ago, i had a set of the alpina front bilstein struts with the big brakes, and the rear upside down ones. i sent them to bilstein to have them rebuilt, and i was curious on the jounce/rebound numbers. while i have long forgotten them, i do remember that i did not like the hd bilstein at the time, because it was too bouncy, and the sports were too stiff. the valving of the alpina rears was right in between. i always thought they were perfect on my car. i forget what the fronts were, but the rears were excellent. at that time, i knew a few of the people who worked there, one of them was also a 2002 owner, and he helped me get them rebuilt
  14. only the 408 is available, the other 2 are nla. these engines are rebuilt by bmwag. in the early days, new engines were inserted into the reman program until bmw got enough cores. dont forget that there will also be a core charge of 1000.00. typically, only the block, crank and connecting rods are reused, sometimes event the rods are replaced. i THINK the engine is covered under the bmw 24 mo unlimited mileage warranty, as covered in sib 01 05 03, dated 6/2003, but check to see if there is a special provision for engines. i dont think there is. but i know they wont be happy if you go racing. if you need more details, feel free to call and ask for me
  15. i think he has an old metric mechanic engine. the head gasket is from e30 m3, which has a stock bore of 93.4mm. so they cannot be s14 pistons, and no other bmw 4 cyl has a 92mm bore. the reason they are stamped 91.93 is because the pistons have got to be smaller than the bore(of course). mahle bmw pistons have a casting nr on the inside of the piston that tells what series they are for, and the actual piston can be tracked from that. somewhere in the back of my memory is that when jim rowe started making his big bore m10, he was using mahle air cooled pistons, i think from vw, and 92mm sounds about right. a really long shot might be a special edition e30 m3, i think for the italian market, which had a smaller displacement s14 engine, but etk no longer has this info
  16. beware of this new line. it is straight, not preformed. while it does fit, because of the stress on the fittings to make the bends needed, after a short while, the line will break. that means fuel at 450psi squirting out. after protesting several times to bmw, the last response i got was, "I have put the line on myself, and it works." well, la dee da. sure, it will install, but there is no longevity. it gets better. bmw says the material used for the original lines(techalon?) is no longer available, so as stock runs out on lines 2, 3, and 4, ALL the lines will be replaced by this stuff. there is hope, however. check: http://www.lieblmotorsport.de/Ford-Info%20Kugelfischer-Einspritzleitungen.htm they have made the lines for the alpina a4s, and these lines should work fine. they may be making the lines for the stock tii, too. and it looks like they are using the material that bmw says is nla.
  17. you must be doing something with bmw logo. i know of several shops/businesses that were closed by bmw. one place was making key fobs, and their biggest customer was a bmw dealer. no more. many years ago, there was a place gold plating the roundel. no more. a very popular vendor had to pull back all of it's clothing with bmw logos, i think they still have thousands, but cant sell them. copyright infringement. shop i used to work at got sued. the owner drove all over houston with the team of attorneys pointing out other shops that were displaying the marque, and other bmw associated phrases. the attorneys told him that yes, all those places were in violation, and they might come after them, too, but for now, it was HIS shop they were after. he had to take down all his bmw posters, his awning(bmw colors), his clock, his doormat(said ultimate driving machine), even his awards that he had gotten when he worked at the dealer. yup, them awards do NOT belong to the tech, and cannot be displayed without permission from bmw. he basically complied with what they wanted, and life went on. another shop i know very well actually fought them in court, and won. his logo had been on display for a long time, and it was like bmw waited too long. however, the judge told him in chambers that even tho he would win THIS case, bmw had deep pockets, and they would appeal, and keep appealing until he went broke defending himself. so, if they is after you, the cheapest way out is to comply
  18. in the picture above, where the starter goes thru the block there is a machined boss. the engine nr will be STAMPED, not cast, at that spot, and only that spot on the engine. early bmw's engine number always matched the body nr.
  19. there is this one #5 http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=2552&mospid=47140&btnr=13_0665&hg=13&fg=05&hl=15 and this one #19 http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=2552&mospid=47140&btnr=13_0668&hg=13&fg=05&hl=24
  20. not from bmw. the part numbers were discontinued so long ago, even that section no longer appears in etk
