  1. Ready to get plates on the car and noticed the license plate mounts are security screws/bolts. Did a search here and found nothing related to security screws. I've been to 4 auto part stores with no luck. I did find a set of hex pin-hole center wrenches on Sears site and Fastenal for ~$18.00 -$50. It can't be this difficult, I must be missing something here. Anybody recognize where these came from? I will attest to their security - these are really hard to get off. Thanks.
  2. Looks like a great article and awesome graphics, conratulations. You're rigtht on the money with the suggestion to send them a note. I'm renewing my subscription soon, and I will include one and mention the forum. Like many here I've been scouring Hemmings for years and have been impressed with their ongoing attention to the early BMWs. Matter of fact, it was a Hemmings article that got me back to '02s and this forum. Mcgeans article on the bmw2002FAQ was the source of my reinfection with this obsession! http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2008/07/01/hmn_feature10.html Looking forward to the upcoming edition.
  3. If you really want an answer here in the US with real numbers you can either use a motor vehicle locator service or go directly to the 50 state's motor vehicle administrations and buy the report. This would at least show those titled cars still in some form of active registration. A few years back it was around $25 for such a report. I'll look into it here in Maryland where word has it there are dozens of 02s still on the road. It's also good to know there are knowledgable folks in your backyard vs Austrailia where it seems there are very few! Lucky us to have this forum.

  5. There are a number of posts on here that walk thru the possibilities. One of the most common seems to be the under-hood relay (silver cylindrical near distributor) that activates the washer and wiper motors when the washer switch is triggered. Failure of this relay can result in the wiper run-on. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,308534/highlight,wiper+relay/
  6. Thanks for the ideas on this. I'll take another look, but I don't think it's flux spatter - seems just a light spotting- doesn't appear raised or bumpy, and it's light brown. KC: Good idea on the vinegar, that would be mild enough. I was hoping not ot have to flush water in there, so the vinegar flush and fast dry might work. I thought if I gassed up right after the wash-out I'd be ok without doing any further treatment like a phosphate (TSP).
  7. Had the typical pinhole leak from a failed gas tank to body seal. I checked out the tank and there was no sign of ANY rust or other damage- looked new. Then I had a local radiator company boil it out and braze repair the leak. When I got it back, it was a great repair, but it had a light rust coating in part of the tank. What's the best approach? Can I remove the flash rust with a mild chemical wash, then fill the tank? (TSP, Evaporust etc). Or do I have to go all the way with a POR15 tank treatment? Searches here showed a few similar questions, but no really good answers. Tanks in advance!
  8. WTB: A passenger side mirror in good to very good condition to match my '70 02. Please attach a pic if your offering one. Dave in Baltim02e MD 21208 GOT ONE thanks
  9. I've used the RealOEM and the Max sites for parts ID. Are these sites fairly accurate, or should I purchase the BMW parts CD. How useful and complete is the CD vs. the sites? Are these CDs available from anyone other than the dealer?? Thanks,
  10. wow you are lucky to find a Hella red lens foglamp.I've been looking for some time, but no luck at a price I can afford. Check out this link to the bulb your seeking: http://bulbster.com/lightbulbs/ba20d-baseb-type-c-925_926.html Dave in Baltim02e
  11. Paul, I've used Auto Mat in the past for MB450sl restorations and a number of American cars. The 450's got Hargarn wool, not cheap, but it's a buyers market now. I'm thinking of using them to do a trunk trimout on a 70 2002 I'm finishing up now. http://www.autointeriors.biz/Carpeting/2006_AutoMat_Carpet_PDFs/2006_AutoMat_Materials.pdf Dave in Baltim02e
  12. You might also want to check that the flasher is plugged in the correct way. I have a later style (1 less pin) switch that could be inserted wrong. When I checked the pin positions I had inserted it in wrong. Unless you or someone else has had it out it and made this error, as stated in the previous post it's probably an internal fault to the normally unconnected side of the switch bulb wiring. In this case it would be terminal marked R (Blue/Black wire) short to the bulb contact. I've attached a wiring diagram that shows this - see flasher switch marked 54. You might open it up and try and correct the problem, or buy a replacement. Dave's version w new dash OVERSIZE_WIRING.pdf Dave's version w new dash OVERSIZE_WIRING.pdf
  13. What year is your 02, and what style of hazard button do you have e.g. push/pull or push in/pop-out?
  14. Well it's almost Spring and time for me to get the rear window defogger working. I did a number of searches here and o google, no luck. My wiring diagrams (3) show a switch - mine is on the dash marked rear def with wiring in the harness, but I have not yet found the wiring to the window grid. The diagrams do NOT show how the window cycles.; Please tell me this circuit doesn't have a control bi-metallic or timer? Is this just a switched circuit! I will never remember to turn this off. Dave in Baltim02e
  15. I was assuming that RealOEM and Max sites would provide all the part numbers in the production run. I'll pick up a copy of the parts CD. Are these available from third parties, or is this a dreaded trip to the dealer? Thanks.
  16. Thanks for noticing that typo. It's a 70 02. I used spell check, but I didn't use braincheck! Dave in Baltimore
  17. I've searched all over the web and here, but can't find ANY info on these "BMW" part numbers of the wiper and turn stalks in my 79 02. The PO upgraded to a 74-76 wiring harness but these remained. Any idea what I have? On right side: wiper stalk 01835601 1 357 011 (I've checked this 3 times, it's not a typo) I think I need a 1357 004 (maybe an 002 is ok?) On left side: turn indicator stalk 01815811 1 356 294 I think I need the 1357 000 or a cross over? I'm trying to check to see if these are compatible with the 74 harness. Seems the wiper is def not. Not sure about the turn switch. Help!
  18. Sorry for the error, I'm seeking a 1357 004 stalk that runs with the late wiring harness and is compatible with my wisch wasch relay. I'm also seeking the yellow push button fog lamp switch that mounts in the center console. Thanks Dave in Baltimore
  19. Looking for a good condition late model wiper stalk 137 913 (off Inrterval, hi, lo) positions and a yellow or other color (no red) push button switch. in Baltimore Maryland. I have confirmed PayPal account. Dave in Baltimore
  20. Bought a box of various parts and got a great deal from Chris Rouse in Baltimore. Professional BMW mecahnic and 02 enthuisat and owner. I recommend him as a supplier and info source. Dave in Baltimore

I didnt want any food or drink in the car- then I installed cup holders . Now I'm afraid it may have gotten out of hand and I may need help. I'm currently driving, texting, d hh shve, and not only drinking espresso, but I'm brewing it on the dash! Please someone refer me to a 12 step 02 and coffee addiction clinic quick! I luv this Velox: http://www.veloxitaly.it/prodotti6f8d.html?linea=9&lingua=eng Dave mjdxcvfbkdbduc ii n Baltnj more Dave in Baltimore PS: Just kidding about the laptop, cupholders and texting!
  22. I'll taken em. Email sent. Dave in Baltimore
  23. Thanks Mike. You're right on target with your analysis. Seems I have a mix of incorrect/ near-correct parts. The PO did install 2 new stalks. Rightside washer stalk 01835601 1357011. Seems to only have Off, 1 and 2 positions - 7 wire. I'm going to TS the wiper motor (5wire) to see if it runs ok. It did park itself once I placed the wiper stalk back in position. Left side turn signal/dipper stalk 01815811 1356294. 6 wire I have a WishWasch relay ending in 002 number 7 wire. Of course my heater fan runs bavkward due to upgraded dash switching negative (might use relays here to avoid tearing the heater unit out just yet) Seems I might just need the 3 position wiper stalk. How would you approach this?
  24. I've done a number of searches including RealOEM and Google and a few other BMW forums but I'm coming up short. I have part # 1357011 on a wiper stalk, but I can't find this anywhere. I do find a 1357001 on RealOEM. Anybody know what this part number should be for my 76 wiring harness in my 70 '02? RealOEM shows this as an Interval wiper stalk, but I've not found any other controls other than the stalk installed in the PO's "upgrades." Thanks.
