  1. I always wondered if its would be easier for us RHD people. We would still have to deal with motor mounts (no biggie) and trans tunnel (seems a b*tch). But I doubt we would have the steering box issue, although that may turn into brake boster issues. Any RHD m42s out there? I like the idea of the m42/44.. small engine suited to a 2002 thats nice and modern. However when I want power I think I will be inclined to go down the turbo m10 route.
  2. I think I lost allot of the front bias when I installed the 320i discs with volvo calipers and e21 drums.. Thanks for the advice guys. Ill start looking very closely at the mechanism as opposed to the hydrolics.
  3. I might have gone into over kill but I had plenty of time. My engine had been sitting for three years. The outside was heavily corroded. I filled the cylinders with CRC (same as WD40) and let it drain over night. I did this for a few days to ensure I had removed as much internal corrosion as possbile. Then I did the same thing with oil. filled the cylinders let it drain through the engine overnight and did that for a few days. Then I plugged up the sump and filled her up with fresh oil. Upon starting her up she smoked a tremendous amount. It was quit exciting, the whole neigbour hood came out to see. It was a massive amount of smoke. Im talking covering the street. I dont know if it did much but I can tell you my unknown history engine burns no oil now and has pretty good compression.
  4. Hi All I have recently had an issue arise with my rear E21 brakes. One of the brake cylinders started to leak so I replaced it. The problem is now the other brake locks up before the replacement. And to make matters worse I am not entirely sure this problem started after the replacement (the car was on blocks for suspension mods for a month or two) Firstly was I supposed to do the repair as a pair? As far as I can figure, with there being only a single line to the rear which then meets a T-junction the pressure should be even. This should still be true if I have a fault rubber hose (pressure will be reduced on both sides) though they are good and I dont believe this to be the case. neither brake is sticking. Both brakes are adjusted, although I fail to see how adjustment affects pressure applied to the drum, it should only affect pedal travel distance. correct? When I find some time I will swap both cylinders over to see if the problem follows. but before I beg for a bleeding partner I was hoping people could inform me on small technicalities I should look for or know about. Regards Callum in where the F is our summer New Zealand.
  5. Could you tell me is if the megasquirt-1 PCB3.0 with the MSnSE spark firmware will drive a distributer-less wasted spark setup (ie more than 1 hall effect sensor). One of the great things about open source products is the HUGE amount of information, but one of the hard parts is the HUGE amount of information.
  6. For those of you who bought megasquirt what parts would you consider essential. the megasquirt unit (obviously) the stimulator? the d37 cable? relay board? etc? If not essential why would you not buy it.
  7. hey mister sloan I will be embarking on a turbo project when the winter arrives here in NZ. Please pool all the information you gather because ill be in your boat at some point and ill want to pick brains. and im sure I wont be the last
  8. I had the same issue about a year ago. You seem to have covered most of evrything I checked in this thread already. So on a long shot...... I drive a right hand drive 02. The steering column wiring runs the length of the dash to the passenger side (thats driver side for you) where it plugs into the wiring loom (in the form of two plastic clips each carrying 4-5 wires). My guess is despite yearly differences I would imagine that diferences in the left vs right wiring loom is simply the length of wire running the dash to the sterring column (longer on a right hander obviously, but otherwise identical).. Check the clips between the dash wires and the main engine bay wiring loom (i assume it will be at the drivers side feet as it is passenger side feet for my right hander). Mine had a bad connection and set me back about a week and a few years off my life. hope this helps.
  9. I measured mine at ~13cm. which is ~5.1 inches.... and I have just been down to the garage and can now confirm it is exactly 5.1 inchs (13cm). That is the diameter of the coil from the outside all the way across to the outside of the coil at the other side.
  10. You should also quietly remind him that half the reason people are so concerned with airbags is because of vehicles like his.
  11. dont mean to get pedantic. but i thought you should know that I just cant make sense of what you have posted Len. You need to stick some punctuation in. <>
  12. its not that they are not special enough. Its just only a privilaged few own them. the majority of us have the ordinary models (not that there is such thing as an ordinary 02)
  13. Hey Tom Funny you should mention putting the spacer in the top half of the strut housing. I just thought of the last night (took me three weeks - took you two seconds presumably).. I have some spare struts and ill source some junk VW shock inserts to build a mock up. But on first impressions it looks like it might just work. http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.com/parts/autopartswarehouse/quote.jsp?year=1975&product=L3005-26805&application=000194840∂=Strut%20Insert&dp=true If I then source a very stiff spring the car shoul raise slightly so its not too low and yet the suspension will be firm. Ill give it a go with my spare parts and if it works ill build some and post my results. thanks for everyones help.
  14. for the record. people do use coilovers here in newzealand but as I found out today if the shock extension surpasses the spring reach a helper coil and helper pearch are required. Rather expensive option (but may be required).
  15. Ahh, this is where it gets tricky. If I install coilovers i have effectivly modified my car. Once its modified it then needs a cert. At a cert inspection they will wind the pearch down to its lowest to see if the spring falls out. which ofcourse it will and I fail. If I cut the strut I have effectiely modified the car (unless I can do so in a manner that keeps the strut looknig stock). If I had a shock with a shorter reach then there is not as much need for coilovers and everything looks stock and WOF is gained.. does anybody know if it is possible to buy shocks that have a shorter shaft reach? I think if I can't find such shocks Ill just have modify my spare struts and install them only once I have installed the rack and pinion so I can get it all certed at once sometime next year. And for now Ill just get some standard shocks and get the thing to some motokhanas.
  16. all warrant of fitness' in New Zelaand stipulate that you must not have a loose spring - no ifs, buts, or maybes... Its now also ilegal to use cable, pipeing welded to the perches or anything similar. I think the only way I can see to get round this is to bite the bullet, heavily mofdify the suspension and pay the 400$ to get it road certified. Unless ofcourse the shaft on the rabbit mk1 shock inserts actually has a shorter reach? I have seen glf mk2 shock inserts and the shaft reach is the same as the 02 even though the shock itself is shorter. which does not help. If however there is a shock insert with a shorter reach one could place a spacer inside the strut, then place in the shock insert. thus allowing a stumpier spring and not actually having to cut and weld the strut itself. thus passing inspection.. does such an insert exist??
  17. I've never plauyed with the starter mechanism in my 2002 but m fiat had exactly the same issue. I had problems with my starter solinoid (sp?).. next time the car won't start give the solinoid a few taps with a hammer to free the mechanism and see if it starts.
  18. Im considering buying the ireland coilovers. https://secure9.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=ireland&BusType=BtoC&Count1=678020656&Count2=595161080&CategoryID=1&Target=products%2Easp Has anybody bought a pair of these? what did you think? What stops the spring from becoming loose when the strut is fully extended? Here in New Zealand it is completrly ilegal to have loose springs in a road car.
  19. Im not trying to insult your intellegence. I only say this because I spent a whole day trying to diagnose a similar situation before my brother took one look at the engine and said "You have plugged the spark leads in wrong order." Check the obvious!!
  20. ""No Sir, BMW Vin Decoder shows that this vehicle was sold in November of 75. It was manufactured in September of 75 which technically makes it a 76 model. I know that BMW Stopped making the Tii's in 1974, but they were sold all the way up to Jan of 76. This vehicle has been verified with BMW to be a Tii. Thank you for your interest. SDCARMART""
  21. So we can expect the pictures sometime in the next few years nice car!
  22. 1)simply open paint (start - all programs - accessories - paint) 2) in paint choose - file > open 3) find your picture and 'open' it 4) Click on - image > stretch skew (or ctrl + w) 5) change the stretch from 100 to 30 or something for both horizontal and vertical 6) save your changes and post pics of bmw 2002s onto bmw 2002faq.com
  23. I made mine for next to nothing. I copied the orignal shape but you can do what ever you want lookey here http://www.cowlum.netfirms.com/2002console.html
