Radar detector recommendations?

Gordon

Recommended Posts

Gang, received my third ticket in nine months on Sunday, 65 in a 55 zone. It will be a $211 ticket, the state of CA is broke and unfortunately I'm doing my part in helping reduce the state budget deficit. I got clocked by radar from behind by CHP on a canyon road while passing a slow moving vehicle. The CHP officer said he clocked me at 65 while I was passing. He caught up to me two miles later. All of my tickets have been on back roads, the first two times, CHP nailed me coming the other way, did a U-turn and pulled me over. We aren't talking major violations, 70 in a 55, and 65 in a 55 (twice) zone but it's still points on my record.

It's time for me to invest in radar detector, need some recommendations on which brand 02 owners prefer.

A friend of mine has a Valentine that I've borrowed for some road trips, and I like the way it works. I believe the newest software/hardware (I believe they are all upgradeable) support laser detection too I think.

G-Man,

Sorry to hear about your recent contributions to the State of CA.

I've been using a Valentine One since 2003 and have been very happy with it. I find the direction arrows pretty useful - that feature has helped me more than a few times.

Valentine's support is pretty good also - after sales hardware/software updates & repairs are readily available.

I can't say enough good stuff about the V1. Just doesnt have a junk feel to it like other detectors (toys IMHO).

Buy it and you will never regret it.

yes, the predator is hungry and will be fed. the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

remember the value of a detector is knowing his presence before he paints you. if you are the target, it's over. 'SA' as they say in the ads.

I have a Bel 365 x($365) and my son has a cheapo blister pack Bel we bought from radio shack ($65?)

The 365 is a cut above but the cheapo does the job except it trips for automatic door openers, etc.

basically buy one that is equal to the price of one ticket (and your resulting insurance hike). The Valentine is nice since there is no power cord. Had a passport once same thing.

The advantage of the fancier models is that they have voice prompts and when I hear "K-A Band my right foot comes off the pedal instantly.

Is fuel efficiency really what we need most desperately? I say what we really need is a car that can be shot when it breaks down.

The Valentine uses a power cord, you just can't see it in my Jetta (above). I know it's a bunch of money but well worth it.

I've had an Escort for the past 15 years....seems to do the job well. They are expensive to purchase new and the coil cords and suction cups don't hold up well (replacements are readily available on their website), but I would recommend the Escort otherwise.

Valentine is good too, the arrows are a plus..the mounting bracket sucks if you want to take it out of the car when parking...the escort has a better quick release type bracket.

eBay if you hate to buy new.

Before you buy, get the serial # and give Valentine a call, they'll check it against their list of known stolen detectors so you can take some comfort you're not feeding someone's drug habit.

They can also tell you what features the unit has based on the serial #.

I'm not sure the Laser detector is all that useful. Unless you get really really lucky and pick up some scatter, it's just going to tell you that you've just gotten a ticket. . . ;-(

Regards,

John
