Junkyard dog's engine

I got around to evaluating the engine in AndyS' junkyard oh2. I am very pleasantly surprised at the condition the engine appears to be in. I may not have to take the head off! Anyway, what do these casting marks mean...certainly not the year it was cast in, right?

Also, how do I ID the cam? This one has the number 4476 cast in it.

So wait, this means that the head was cast in 1984? Is there any way to ID what it might have come off of?

I have an 84 head and I don't think there is anyway to tell what it came off of.

But why an '84 head? More advanced design? Better reliability?

Just cause they fit and are available in the junkyards? Why?

The 84 just indicates the year the head was cast. It is just a replacement part from BMW that was made in 1984. I don't think there was any redesign of the head after the cars ended production. The other part picture in your post indicates a casting of 1976. The different head designs are designated with E12 , E21 or 121.

yeah, that looks clean.

Leakdown and compression first,

and if that turns out OK, I'd try it.

Yes it was cast in 1984.

As above, look for 121, 121 ti, 121 tii, E12, E21 or 1.8i

to see what it can fit.

That could easily be a stock cam. I don't really agree,

it has a lot of base circle to be a regrind. Not impossible,

but Occam says stock...
