how hard is it to remove the old starter and install one of these?

very easy. Two bolts that slide through the top of the tranny's bell housing. (if I recall correctly) and just keep track of your wiring.

the stock starters are around 16 lbs,

and if this is the M3 version, I'd expect it to be about 8.

Yes, that's $10 per pound removed- cheap in the racing world...

I use one.
