There was hundreds of thousands of 2002 mad, but how rare are they now?

Define rare?

There were a lot of cars made in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Unless you live near Pierre, you are apt to see more cars from the 90's and 00's on the street. Bugatti's are not rare at the Museo Schlumpf! Your question is so open ended as to be unanswerable.

the US "officially"--and I suspect the number of individually imported cabrios, Turbos and Tourings is pretty small. An impressive number, until you consider there are approximately 200 million vehicles on US roads today. So that's a pretty small percentage, even without considering that a significant percentage of that 100k are gone.

I saw an estimate a few years ago from an authoratative source (might have been BMW) that approximately 15k were still around in the US--that's registered and non-registered--as of then. I doubt if there are that many now.

They seem rare because even 15,000 in a 200,000,000 pool is a very small number. To me, the number is just right--uncommon enough to attract attention, but common enough to make parts availability good, and have lotsa fellow 02 owners to talk to!

cheers

a few came here new, and not too many rusted away unless they were driven into the mountains in the winter or left outside near the ocean) - vintage BMW events like the Bay Area 02 Swap and Show or SoCal Vintage meet commonly draw 100 cars or more.

I'd guess there are currently at least 30-50 '02s in the greater Sacramento area - rarely a month goes by here that I don't see at least one '02 on the street that I've never seen before..........

By far the rarest "plain" 2002 is the 1968 model, especially in anything resembling original condition. 69-76's are more common to find in running shape. Tii's are pretty rare since fewer were made, but they are also more likely to have survived and been restored. 2002 Turbos and 1600 Cabriolets are very rare. The earliest of 02's, 1966-67 1600-2's in good condition are just as rare as Turbos, perhaps more-so, but not as valuable.

Hi Dirk,

what about the 2002 MAXI?

Regards,

Jacques (Belgian 1600 Cabrio ;-).

Any way to get larger images of the MAXI brochure so we can read the text.

Nobody knows it because these cars have serial chassis numbers…

It seems that they are as rare to find as Dianas
