Qs for the twin weber guys. Car is almost done. PIC

Thank you all for the advice. I am still waiting to hear back from the shop. They are pretty busy apparently. I had an alternator that was in excellent shape, but I sold it a few months ago for SUPER CHEAP.

I went to Top End today to check out what they have for filters and found the pod style along with the one below

The shop owner recommended that I "Chop" my horn and mount it directly to the carb since my horns are the ones that extend and mount the choke in the carb. I am contemplating this option...Just don't feel like chopping these beauties up to be honest since they are original Italians and I am not sure if I can replace them.

is this filter really worth chopping them? How bad could the Pod style tilt be?

Yeah I am not sure if the mech fuel pump is overkill...too late now :) its mounted nicely in the trunk under the right cover on the top right corner of the fuel tank. I believe we also installed a fuel pressure regulator.

One thing I noticed the motor was not too loud at idle/3k rpm. with IE headers and exhaust, I thought it was going to be louder. I am happy it turned out not too loud. My neighbors are already dealing with my E34 BB triflow at 6am heading to work...

  • 6 years later...

My car is ALMOST done. I went to pick it up yesterday and unfortunately the stock alternator is not good enough. I do not plan on installing newer stereo or amps..etc so here is my first question Please pardon my nooobness I am new to this game!:

1) what is the best alternator for the job? any modifications needed? DIY?

As you can see for the pic below, No filter yet. The brake booster is soooo close to the horn which limits my options. Also, the oil dip stick it right there in the middle!

Here is what I found just looking around for filters:

Pod style

Ramflow it shows only for 48 dcoe though on top end website?

Screen pop-on style (pierce manifolds) Apparently its better than the screens that top end sells. Looks like it would block better:

So my second question is:

2) Which one do you recommend that gives me the best clearance and doesn't interfere with the oil dip stick?

Thanks.

Love my UNI filters with 15 degree angled bases; and they easily clear my standard booster. post-42878-0-28965000-1441117789_thumb.j

If you are running tulip velocity stacks, you need the style that IE sells with an adapter ring on the stack. http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002-fuel-intake/DCOEfltr.html

Socks.  Screens cause turbulence and actually have quite a lot of air restriction and don't keep fine particles out.  Spruell also sells a longer angled filter not listed on their web site which is what I have on mine.  Maximize the sock surface area for max airflow and minimal filtering resistance.

good info, in lieu of a part number, do you have dimensions? how about a photo? can one order direct from UNI filter? I think the Spruell website states the angled UNI is made special for them.

yep....http://www.unifilter.com/clamp-on/  Scroll about 2/3s down for the angled, clamp-on, dual layer pods.  Those come with the additional, red, pre-filter for dusty, off-road use.

I used # UP-6245 AST, but you'll need to measure the OD of your stacks for your application. Note, that the Ireland units have a that little adapter ring that butts up against the flare of the stack. You might ask if that is available, separately.
