replace cam with engine in?

Is it possible to swap a cam with the head on the engine and in the car?

I know it will take a toll to compress all the valves at once but is it possible?

maybe... thinking of getting a turbo grind made. So more lift but no over lap.

Just thinking I might be loosing pressure because of the overlap with the NA 292.

And I have access to a water jet and thinking about making a cam removal tool thingy if this is possible.

Yes BUT..... if you attempt to use the 2002haus cam removal tool with the head on the engine and in the car and things go wrong..........

Basically you set the motor to TDC remove the distributor and cam gear then carefully rotate the crank back about 45 degrees to drop the pistons down to clear all the opening valves. Compress the valves with the tool, Detach the motor mounts and lift the motor so the camshaft clears the radiator support......

Installation is the reverse of removal. HA! :-P

Is it scarry? YES!

Does it work? YES!

Have I done it yet? Not yet, but in theory it should work!?

Sounds mighty dangerous to the valve train to me. You're going to need compress all the valves, which means you're not going to be at TDC. You're going to need to insert the new cam and get the sprocket lined up to exactly where it was on the old cam. I suppose it could be done if you mark everything very carefully as you pull it apart and make sure the crank doesn't get turned at all while you're taking it apart..

I've done this a few times by removing the radiator passenger side grille and pass. side motor mount which should drop the engine down enough so that the cam just clears through the cowling (at least on my car)

But, I've yet to come up with a good way to hold the rocker arms out of the way

NO = because the time you spend to

jack, bend, lever, gouge, scratch, wedge, destroy, pop-off,

damage all the parts your working with - you could

have easily removed the head and do it right - in a fraction of time .
