MSD 6A w/ crankfire trigger setup without distributor?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to figure out how to go distributorless on my Tii. I already bought the MSD 6A box, universal crankfire trigger, and blaster 2 coil.

Question: Where do the sparkplug wires plug into?

WOW! Loaded question.

I think there are a few ways to go about it. But first you have to understand the benifit of crank fired ignition. Having the crank fire (or trigger) the ignition makes for a VERY stable and consistent igition timing setup. Having the ignition triggered from a gear drive off the cam that is chain driven opens up a bunch of tolerances for slop and can be easaly seen with a timing light as timing marks jump around. Of course, if everything is new, the jump is less.

Using a Ford EDIS setup from a 1.9 escort will get you on your way but you won't use your MSD box and you will still have to run a Megasquirt to run the timing advance as the EDIS system does not change timing on it's own, it needs an outside signal to do that.

If your bent on using that MSD box, you could fire it with a crank trigger and make it fire the coil and then run it back to your distributer for spark distribution. I think MSD may make some sort of timing advance moduel, but I'm not sure.

Looks to me the best way is to run timing from a Megasquirt setup.

Good luck and ask more questions.

John is correct. AFAIK the MSD box will not provide an advance curve. So you will need to find a way to do that.

I agree with him that an EDIS setup is a good way to go. However, instead of using Megasquirt take a look at the MegaJolt system. It is an ignition only system and works very well. I just installed one on the racecar and it starts and runs better than ever. If you don't plan to add injection to the car then MegaJolt is a great solution.

Megajolt info is available at www.autosportlabs.net

Hopefully you can return the MSD ...

This MSD system is a complete 4 cylinder distributorless ignition with programmable advance, triggers, the whole nine yards. You need to work out the crank wheel and add coils. I wish someone would try it and tell me how it performs!

OUCH, for 650 bones you could convert your car to megasquirt and an EDIS setup.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
