Turn Signal and Washer switch

Go to solution Solved by Mark92131,

As I begin to take stock of everything, i noticed that my turn signal and washer/wiper stalks are not working (which would be a general overstatement as they are both broken).

The turn indicator stalk has been removed from the housing (i think the pin was snapped) and the washer/wiper switch has been opened (and i think the contacts on the actual stalk have been lost).

Is it easier to just replace with like items or fiddle with a repair. If repair, what is the best way? Any pics on what the contacts for the washer stalk are supposed to look like?

Thanks

What year is your car?  Presuming you have a roundie, ,there are two different turn signal switches used on 'em:  68- mid 71 (166/167XXXX VIN) and a second (257/8/9XXXX VINs).  The latter also incorporates the wiper on-off switch.  Some pictures of the wreckage would also help.

You can try repairing (you have nothing to lose since it's already broken).  I wrote a column on repairing a turn signal switch that won't stay in the on position if that'll help.  And if you have the later style (push button wiper on/off switch) I did another column on how to repair that.  New ones ain't cheap, so you're ahead if you can fix what you've got.

Mine isn't a roundie - it's a 74. I'll try and get some pics of the mess :)

See attached images. The wiper/washer has already been opened. See missing contacts (?)

The other is the turn signal.

As I'm sure you know, on all squarelights, the right side stalk is just for wipers: on/low/high (and possibly intermittent) while the left stalk is turn signals (up and down stalk motion), low/high beams (push away from the driver) and high beam flasher (pull stalk towards you).

It appears that the upper picture is of the turn signal/high beam/flasher stalk.  If you have the innards, you may be able to reassemble it.  Post a picture of the other side (where the terminals are located)

The lower picture must be the wiper stalk.  If that's all you have for it, you're gonna need another one.  They're all common to 74-76 cars (and I think E21s) so you should be able to score a good used one.

So i removed both from the car, and i think i messed up the turn signal one with my ham handedness. I got it open not realizing that, of course, there may be small parts ready to fly everywhere.. The wiper one, i think , is also done.

What I'm trying to say, is I think i just need two "new" ones.

I have found someone who is selling a set out of a 77 E21. These are the round stalks that look remarkably similar and they have the same rectangular (not square as in the E21)  connectors. Could I use these instead? the price is reasonable.
