1969 1600 gas tank vs 1972 2002 tank.

Question about the filler neck.

The '69 tank has a short neck, about two inches straight up whereas the '72's filler neck is longer and curved at the top.  The difference is because there are two types of plastic elbows that conner the tank to the quarter panel.

If I cut down the filler neck on a '72 tank to the same height as the '69, will it fit the early style elbow?  I see no reason why this won't work because it appears that the tanks the same except for the height and shape of the filler neck.

I understand there are different length sending units  This is about fitting an early plastic elbow on a modified 72 tank.

Mike, I tried this and it doesn't work. It reaches and all but just not enough to fasten the neck at the top of the filler. I made that mistake and now I have a very nice tank with the long neck cut off. I will post picture for you.

Resra, Thanks for your response and knowledge....I will learn from your mistake!!

BTW- the head arrived in good shape- one of the posts was bent, but should be an easy fix.

Resra, you can salvage that tank of yours with a short length of fuel-proof hose of the proper diameter and a couple of hose clamps.  After all, the factory clamped the rubber connector between tank and filler; this would just be a second one.

My 68 has the old style fender mounted filler connection, the old style (much bigger than the new) rubber boot to match, and a newer tank with the unmodified longer neck filler that has the bend on it.

The bent portion of the neck will easily go inside the older style boot without hitting the boot's rubber sides.  It installs easily by flexing the rubber a bit, unless it's an old boot that has hardened (and is probably cracked anyway.  Yes, a new boot is supposed to be flexible, at least it was when I bought one about 4 years ago)

When you fill the tank, the gas pump nozzle goes inside the boot and the long metal neck of the tank.  It works fine.  NO NEED to cut down the neck.  Added bonus, you won't hit the rubber boot with the gas pump nozzle when filling it.

No idea how this works with California's wonderful vapor recovery gas pump nozzles, sorry.

Great info everyone.  Very helpful! I’m still searching for an early style tank- I bought one that needs repair.  In the end, a new tank makes sense.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
