Propeller Shaft Type

I am re-installing my propeller shaft / guibo on my '72 2002 and I see different torque specifications for "shaft with sliding section" and "shaft without sliding section", however, I cannot find the definition of "sliding section".  What does that mean and what do I have?  Sorry for my ignorance...

Some drive shafts have a splined section in them allowing to be made longer or shorter as needed, I think the only 02's that had them were the very early long neck diff ones.

I have 67 1602 with the long nose diff and the splined drive shaft with 6 bolt flex discs at both ends. I think the purpose of the spline is to allow shaft installation and removal. Most 2002s have drive shafts with a U joint at the middle. You probably should use the torque specs for a non splined option.

 

I converting to a 5 sp trans so I have to shorten the drive shaft and use a 8 bolt flex disc at the trans end. Has anyone done this?

This is a sliding section, you dont have it😉

On your 02, the two driveshaft sections are connected with a fairly large nut.

As you can see, thats not the case here, pretty common set up.

This ones from an E30 85 318i.

Use the non sliding section torques especially on that big nut that holds everything together.

Clean and dry and  a bit of blue lock tight wouldn't hurt.

oh, I thought we were talking 2002s.  But you're totally right- the bigguns did haveum.

 

I actually don't know squat about the early big cars- not for lack of longing....

....just lack of funding!

I have an e9 Frankenshaft in my car. The rear half stays the same, I have different front half’s to match whatever trans I’m using. I just unbolt the guibo and the csb and slide on/off whatever I’m using. What? That’s crazy. I know, right?
