Headrests

Hmm...I bought some headrests a while back and had them re-covered to match the seats which were being re-upholstered at the same time. Only problem was I (stupidly) didn't check the strut diameter first; they are 12mm rather than the 10mm I need for my earlier type seats.

Any idea's on how I could make them fit (sensible ones please 😀 ), given how hard it is to find headrests (particularly here in the UK)? I thought about drilling the holes in the seats, but given the seats are full of horse hair I predict a fire!

You may have to remove the upholstery from your 12mm brackets and find a set of trashed 10mm brackets to swap your upholstery onto.

Presuming you have a RHD 2002, the changeover from 10mm to 12mm brackets occurred at 1659275, so you could also look for a couple of derelict seat backs seats from a car with a VIN higher than that (2521591 for a 2002A, 2751447 2002tii) and swap your upholstery onto those backs.

Drilling the seat back isn't recommended as the socket is a thin wall tube and won't take being drilled for an additional 2mm.

Hi Mike,

I think I will try the first option - just need to find some now 😄

I’m not certain what precisely you’ll be swapping, but remember that the January 1973-and-later headrests, besides moving from 10 mm. to 12 mm. support posts, also moved from a tubular headrest shape to an eared headrest. The covers are not perfectly interchangeable.

Below, the first photo shows the earlier tubular style and the second photo shows the later eared style.

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
