Hello forum

long time 02 guy. Know some of you on sight from buying and selling parts.

I have had this engine for a long time. I am in process of rebuilding for my 1970 1602 motor that is getting tired.  It is a non matching 1600 engine so just want upgrade to this 2.0.  Have new header, new intake for a new Weber 32/36, electronic ignition and a few other fun parts. If any can tell me what or where my block came from that would be great.

  • Solution

That's a reman from BMW-

Steve will decode all the numbers, but from the

milled- off surface and the 21, it's at least 0.25mm over,

and for the US market.

As Toby said, remanufactured in August 1978 (“08  8”), or August 1988…

Read the following for more information.

Engine code “21” = 1974-75 E12-head engine

Serial number “0074” = 74th engine remanufactured that month(?)

”A” = remanufactured engine

The casting date on the block, and possibly the casting date on the head — if it’s been mated to the block since the remanufacturing — might help establish the correct remanufacturing decade.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks for all the info.  I have a different E12 head than what came with engine. I have had around 12 or 13 02’s over the last 30 years. So lots of spares. This 70 is last one I own and my daughters are instructed to use as my final resting place when time comes since all 3 refuse to learn to drive a manual😀. Their loss. Once again all great info.  Happy New Year and safe motoring. Duke

And the block was cast January 8, 1975 (“8A” within the raised oval frame, and “75” just outside the frame). Thus, the block probably began its life in a 1975 2002, or was cast as a replacement block in 1975.

Good luck with your build!

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
