Description:

Hello 2002ers!

I’m looking for a running (or nearly so) pre-1976 2002 for around $12,000. Cash in hand and ready to buy!

I’ve loved these cars for years, and am finally ready to start my new life of obsessively tracking tiny parts from across the globe as I restore one myself.  Some rust is Ok, as I plan a rolling restoration until I can afford full bodywork and paint.  It’s got to be in nice (enough) condition that I can feel safe (enough) driving my daughter to school in the meantime.

I’m in California and I’d rather not worry about smog, so no 1976 cars.

Willing to travel to western US to pick up and drive home, or will pay to transport (so long as it comes in under budget).

Thank you for any leads!  I’m excited to finally join the group.

Big thanks to everyone who has responded here or reached out privately. It’s been a crash-course, and the 2002 community is great!

Still looking for a driver-quality 2002 for around $12-15k.

I’ve found lots of cars around the $20k price point, but alas, I only have so much money.  Paul’s car looks great, but it would cost $2k to ship, which blows the budget.

I may end up in an e21 instead, and can “upgrade” to a 2002 later. I’m holding out hope that I’ll find just the right car, but my wife is getting tired of driving me to work!

Well, now I’ve had two very nice 2002 owners offer to sell me their cars, then rescind the offer once they drove their cars and remembered why they bought it in the first place.

So … I’m **still** on the hunt for a driver-quality 2002.  Cash in hand and ready to buy.

More than ready, you might say… I feel like an adoptive parent who can’t find a baby. The nursery’s ready!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
