Hey Les - well I'm just reporting what was told to me by Andreas. Verbatim. Mod 71 or 73, I would think most go by the car designation, being the 2002 in this case.

Perhaps you can communicate with Andreas?

Sounds like an EARLY mod 71, 2002 touring tii, just got rarer!

Thanks for your comments.

Nah, don't need to bother Andreas.

I was just trying to inform you on Tourings as you've only been into them for a couple of weeks. My mistake.

@BarneyNot so far but I haven't gotten too deep.

Does anyone know what this  stamp signifies? It's stamped on top of the trunk support..

Numbers such as these also often appear on (a.) the top ledge of the bulkhead under the front edge of the rear seat, and (b.) the left end of the apron connecting the front facia and the radiator support — but only on early 1600-2’s and 2002’s.

Myth has been quick to describe them as VIN’s, or partial VIN’s, manufacturing dates, etc. But no one has yet shown me any that actually match a VIN, or part of a VIN, or provide a meaningful date. So I don’t know what they are beyond to say they perhaps played a role in identifying parts and aiding assembly.

Regards,

Steve

The reply from BMW is VERY odd.

For BMW to say there was not a Touring ‘crossover model’ is misleading. The model 73 Touring, just like the sedans, had the updated front panel & grills and the fake wood cluster surround and ‘crosshair’ gauges.

What is generally stated as a 2002tii Touring in the faq ‘Production Numbers’ page, is the ‘facelift’ model built from 08/73 thru’ 04/74 and known as model 73. 724 of them were manufactured.

Your car, 3425XXX, is known as a model 71 E6 Touring tii. It is, therefore, one of 5059 built between 04/71 & 07/73. While it may have a 2002tii script on the rear and noted as 2002 in the sales paperwork etc., it is still a model 71 Touring tii.

Info that I have, would suggest BMW started to put the 2002 script badge on the rear of Tourings in June, or July, 1973. So, a few model 71 Touring tiis left the factory with a 2002tii badge on the rear, BUT, they were still model 71 E6 Tourings.

FWIW:

3424180, 3424275, 3424680 all have 2000tii scripts on the rear.

3424974, 3425059 have 2002tii scripts on the rear.

All the above would have been built late June into July 1973 and are model 71 Touring Tiis.

You posted earlier that the “Production Numbers” in the faq was in error…..

https://www.bmw2002faq.com/articles/technical-articles/history-and-reference/production-numbers-r228/

Now, realizing that BMW 2002 Touring tiis are actually the ‘facelift models’ model 73 only. The above reference in regard to Tourings is not incorrect.

HTH

I’m fully in agreement with Les. There was a “square taillight version” (a.k.a., Modell 73) of the touring model. Even though the touring never got square taillights per se, it received the other features of the square taillight cars, e.g., larger, plastic front grilles, upgraded electricals, crosshair instruments, styled steel rims, etc.

Yea, no biggie either way. I'm a 02 newbie so all info is good. It does seem like a bit of a gray area, hence my question regarding a transition model and his response.  After I received his response, I asked if there was any record of the beginning 2002 production VIN and here was his response.

"I’m afraid there is no way to say when the first car with the “2002 tii touring” badge left the factory. These cars did not get a new number range and the change was only a minor cosmetic one anyway."

Second of all, my car (which is a later ‘72 tii - euro version) has the IDENTICAL steering wheel cover on it.

Wow that is strange. Maybe it was a Swiss trend ?

@JohnP_02 - Don't worry, I'll take it off after things are cleaned up! I tool a peek and the leather underneath looks really good. I just have to figure out the white plastic horn button anchors. One of them is missing.

So a question for the Euro Tii /Touring experts. On my lower dash under the wheel, there is a Hella 61/11 push pull switch which looks to be part of the original fog light harness in the engine compartment. You can just make out the 61/11 on the back of the  switch.  I've included a couple pics of the area under the panel. I was a bit taken  aback by how clean it is.

Do any of you w euro cars/ tourings have a similar push pull switch in that location? The dash switches are headlights and rear screen heater to the left and lighter and wiper speed below on the right so I'm thinking this logically has to be the factory placement?20220710_140106.thumb.jpg.5061e16bad1e396a846ca32a2de453a2.jpg

The push-pull switch does not look factory to me, at least not for 1973. Factory auxiliary lights, in 1973 (unheard of on a U.S.-spec ‘02 but conceivable on a Euro-spec ‘02, perhaps even mandatory in some European jurisdictions) generally used a green illuminated pushbutton, which replaced a green dummy button on the console.

Below, the first photo shows the green button, illuminated, in my ‘76. The console, however, is the Clardy A/C version. The second photo shows the green button, not illuminated but circled in red, in my ‘73, with its current non-A/C console, closer to how your car’s console originally appeared.

Some early Euro-spec 02’s, say 1967-68 1600-2’s, had an added-on panel underneath the steering column, which sometimes housed the emergency flasher switch. And I believe I’ve occasionally seen an auxiliary light switch — unknown whether it was factory or post-factory — mounted in the same location. And this was roughly analogous to the installation of your car’s switch. But this was in the years before the green dummy button appeared on the console. 1973 is well into the green dummy-button era…

Steve

@Conserv Thanks Steve. I do have the dummy green switch above the radio. I'll look closer when  I pull the radio out. How were the rear fogs lights activated? Was there a factory location for those or were they personal preference?

The car came from Switzerland so not sure what the law might have required.

In some jurisdictions, front and rear fog lamps were illuminated, by law, simultaneously (as we see on most Mercedes and Audis today, whether or not they’re Euro or U.S.-spec). If your rear fog light was not, however, wired with your front fog lights, I believe you were on your own to add a switch — somewhere. I don’t believe there was a tidy and fixed “factory” solution at the time. Rear fogs were most common in countries that required them.

I suppose we could look in the original parts catalogue, which might also show where fog lights were required — I’m thinking Sweden for one.

Steve

My first 02 arrived yesterday, and I'm pretty stoked! Some of you might have seen this car on CL a couple weeks back in Boise Idaho. It's a 73 2002 Touring Tii w 118k km on it and based on the paperwork, sold by the long term, 2nd owner.

Had a PPI done by the Bret Hurless from Hurless Brothers in Boise and the car checked out so the deal was consummated.

The car was picked up at 9am on Wed, and arrived yesterday at 9:20. Just a tad more than 24hrs later. Very impressed.

I've never driven an 02 but my first impressions were really great. Right into San Francisco, morning traffic and the car was happy to trundle along. Immediately struck me as a happy, quiet companion. I was smiling the whole time. My other "classic" BMW is a 72 3.0 CSL, and I wouldn't describe it as anything other than a b*tch!

Anyway I wanted to formally introduce myself and start a thread memorializing the beginning of my 02 journey.

One of the first concerns is the paint. By all appearances and suggested by Bret, the paint looks original which is great BUT BMWs metallic base coat /clear coat tech was pretty bad and the clear coat is failing on the horizontal surfaces. I'm going to try and gently get to the base coat and re-clear to preserve the original paint. Any suggestions (outside of a repaint) would be appreciated.

Front and rear Fog Lights were operated together from the Fog Light switch.

See items 77 (switch), 72 & 73 (front lights) and 81 (rear light) on the Touring tii electrical diagram below.

Did a quick clean on the engine compartment. Needs a detailing but actually came out better than I thought..

Also, there was this interesting material under the battery. It was quite fragile. What ever it is, it keep the battery pan perfect. Anyone have a clue what it could be? 20220716_191807.thumb.jpg.a0f9996abd61c21bdf0127f741461bb7.jpg20220716_191402.thumb.jpg.cd68634dcc67acb4495ea5a8f10816ef.jpg20220716_151739.thumb.jpg.a95d7939e4aadec900490f39c2f4db2f.jpg
