Hella canister Horn Relay

So here's the (sad) thing...
I've never really liked the engine bay look of the later type plastic Hella horn relay in my car.
I've always preferred the metal canister type but those are NLA or really expensive if you can find a NOS one.

And seeing as we have winter and red warning storms in the UK at the mo' my car is garaged and tucked up nice and safe until the weather improves.

Gives me time to noodle...

Just wanted to see what i can do with 3D software, 3D printer and my daughters inkjet printer... created a (faux) cover for the plastic relay.. I'll live with it for a while until the originality police collar me!  ?

Only issue now is that the fixing bracket isn't correct! ?

Nice job!

Dunno if it's more available than the NLA original round Hella relay for roundie horns, but years ago I discovered that the same relay was used on Volvos of the P1800/122S/early 142 variety for such things as the overdrive, horns etc.  Perhaps you can find one either on a Volvo parts car or from a Volvo specialist,

And...I've had pretty good luck carefully bending back the crimping around the cover's edge, then cleaning the relay's points to get an inop one functioning again.

what is the rectangle one next to it used for?

That's the voltage regulator for the original alternator, which uses an external regulator.  If someone has replaced your alternator with a more powerful one from an E21 or E30, they have internal regulators.

And your squarelight has a whole row of small metal or plastic relays in that same location as the single one on a roundie (per the picture).  Roundies only have a relay for the horn, while squarelights have relays for the horns, high beams and a couple of other functions.

Well, i've learnt something!
Mine is a RRL... but I've updated to later front/rear (don't ask... a bad decision years ago!).
But I've always wondered why some cars have that row of canister relays in that position... now i know ?

I replaced the original relays with Bosch 0 332 019 151 for the High, Low, Horn and Fog. These have the double #87 tab which is nice for fog, driving lights and dual horns, etc.

If I reinstall the old Hella relays.......can I call my car a "Roundie"?
