M10, E10, Type 114--they have all been used interchangeably for decades in Europe, by the German 2002 club and specifically by BMW AG itself.  Small potatoes.

FAKE NEWS! :D

"Both designations - E10 and 114 - are correct in a way though E10 must be a retroactively assigned designation. However we never use it in the BMW Classic or the BMW Group Archives, instead we call the type 2002 and if we mean the whole series we call it the "Null-Zweier". That's quick and clear, no need to complicate things. Even in official documents the other designations are very seldom used and since it leads to confusion easily, we just don't use it.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz"

Smaller potatoes.  Especially when all the terms are used by current enthusiasts globally.  Look up the word "quaint" as used in "The Canterbury Tales" to see how the meaning/significance of words change over time.  Or, for a more recent example, track the evolution of "OG" in the contemporary vernacular.

It was popularized by the stanceworks crowd, but has been on a steady decline since it's 2014-ish heyday.  I know of very few current enthusiasts who knowingly use it.

**The exception being sellers/shops and those wanting to be Instagram "influencers" trying to reach a wide audience (since E10 is easier to use in searching ebay/craigslist/etc), hence the default/knee-jerk use here.

As said .... potatoesssss  ..... and a DANG good price on the bumper,

As was said above somewhere, the E10 term came from our friends 'sur le continent', which is odd as the Euro '02s had E code stickers next to the VIN plate none of which were printed E10. The German '02 Owners/Clubs usually use it (E10) for model 73 and on cars as that was when the E-Code stickers changed and dropped the TYP 114 (except E6 for Tourings) in preference for just 2002.

No one has yet come up with an official document from BMW with E10 on it that I know of. Probably, as BMW has acknowledged they never used it.

Just another BMW '02 myth (there's a few around) that will become 'cast in concrete' by all the younger Owners that don't know (or want to know) the Marque's history.

You might want to let Jackie Jouret know about the community wisdom on the terminology.  Maybe she can include all the fact based historical documentation provided here in her next book, "E10 vs M10, the real story behind the nonsense".

The BMW 2002, The real story behind the legend, pages 53 and 54 attached.
