New 1600 Owner

Hello. Brand new BMW 1600 owner here, anxious to get started on “Rudi” the 1968 1600 I just picked up yesterday. That said, I was doing some research today, and discovered I might have found a car that was a rare color in the US? Does anyone know anything about the color “Bristol?” Production numbers, etc.? Any info you all have would be greatly appreciated.

PS- Great content here, keep up the good work!!!

Great! There are several good threads on Bristol (search on key terms such as....”Bristol”). But, unfortunately, no one knows the actual numbers produced — of any colors.

These threads, which you may have already seen, include, for example:

I’m guessing that VIN 1561272 was manufactured in approximately November 1967. Have you requested BMW Archives’ data on the car yet? It will provide the precise manufacturing date. Just send your VIN in an email requesting the data to:

info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com

No charge. Generally takes one or two business days. After you receive the information, post it here and place the car in this site’s Registry for ‘02’s.

Congrats and welcome!

Steve

I purchased my Bristol 69' 2002 from the original owner.  I confirmed on his original invoice it was a special order color.  At least that was the case from the Palo Alto, CA dealership back in July of 1969.  I believe the color was only available up until 1970 or so.  I'm not sure but I also believe the 1600 had a smaller palette of colors available in the early years so it may be that from a percentage perspective Bristol is not as rare, but I may be wrong here.  Others can chime in.  In general it's a fairly rare color.  I haven't seen or heard of many original Bristol 2002's out there.

Good luck with the car, always nice to see another "Battleship Grey" one out there.  I think it's one of those colors you either like, or are kind of like "blah".  I find it's plainness very unique.  Something cool about how basic the color is.

Thanks for all the info and comments, great to part of a forum like this. This will be my first German resto, so I am undoubtedly gonna turn to you all for info and pointers. Haven’t had much of a chance to dig into the car yet, but hoping to get after it some this weekend. All I know right now is “Rudi” has plenty of personality and despite her hagard appearance seems to like to be driven! I will post more pics this weekend...

THANKS AGAIN ALL!

PS- I am located in Oregon, though have family ties to Idaho.
