A frequent contributor to FAQ named HBChris makes and sells a filler tube adapter that is used at the pump.  After experiencing the same filling difficulties cited in this topic, on the recommendation of a friend, I bought one from HBChris and never regretted it - it just works every time at every pump I've used in SoCal.  Hopefully, he's still making them.  Just search for him and send a message for the details.
